"I-I can't find Scott anywhere." Allison said in a concerned tone.
Adrianna moved down the stairs quickly with the rest of her friends, her mind dwelling on all the possible scenarios of where Scott could be. He was the strongest out of them all, which means he could either be trying to fight whatever pull was making these wolves want to kill themselves or, it could have a stronger effect on him.
"It's happening to him too, isn't it?" Stiles questioned, although he didn't really need to.
"It has to be. But didn't you say there was another flare on the bus?" Lydia asked
"Yeah. I'll get it."
They rounded the stairs as they reached the bottom and started to slow down. An overwhelming scent of gasoline instantly hit their noses, and the burning of fire hit their ears. Their eyes landed on Scott standing near the bus, his head down, his clothes and skin soaked in gasoline that pooled at his feet and the lit flare in his left hand.
Allison moved around them, her eyes watering with tears already. "Scott."
Adrianna slowly followed her cousin, unable to tear her eyes from her friend in such a vulnerable state. She didn't want her second theory to be correct, she prayed had that it wasn't because standing in front of him now, she knew that she couldn't loose another person.
"Scott." Allison said once more.
Adrianna moved to the right side of Allison, her hands trembling. She didn't want to feel this feeling again, lost and hopelessness. Her eyes landed on the drained red gasoline jug at her feet. She could already feel the lump forming in her throat. A few months ago, she couldn't have cared less about what happened to this kid. But a lot can happen in a few months.
Scott gently raised his eyes to look up at them, eyes that were broken. "There's no hope." His voice was hoarse and close to cracking with tears of his own.
Allisons face fell. "What do you mean Scott?" She tried to smile, tried to show him that she had not given up on hope. "There's always hope." She sounded like she was convincing herself more than him.
"Not for me." Scott slowly moved his eye line to Adrianna, his features softening and cracking. "Not for Derek."
Adrianna shook her head, unable to stop a tear slipping down her cheek as images of Dereks battered body lying still at the bottom of the escalator flashed across her mind. He shouldn't feel guilty over that, it wasn't his fault. If anything, it was hers.
"Derek wasn't your fault." Allison said for Adrianna. "You know Derek wasn't your fault."
"Every time I try to fight back, it just gets worse. People keep getting hurt. People keep getting killed."
Adrianna's hand flew to her mouth, hiding a sob that raked up her throat. She hated being this vulnerable, especially in front of her friends. But him using her own words against himself, it broke her that he felt the same way she did. That he felt like the monster she knew she was.
"Scott, listen to me, okay? This isn't you, alright?" Stiles slowly started to step forwards. "This is someone inside your head telling you to do this. Okay now-"
"What if it isn't?" Scott cut off, he took in a sharp breath. "What if it is just me? What if, doing this is actually the best thing i could do for everyone else?"
Allison grabbed Adrianna's hand, squeezing it for a lifeline.
Scott let out raged breaths, his tears mixing with the gasoline sliding down his cheeks. He knew that this was right, that he was the cause for Dereks death, that he couldn't keep his relationship with Allison, that he couldn't save Adrianna from herself. It was all his fault. "It all started that night, the night i got bitten. Do you remember the way it was before that? You and me, we were-we were nothing." His voice was barely above a whisper, his breathing carrying his small sobs. "We weren't popular. We weren't good at lacrosse." He lowered his eyes. "We weren't important."
A tear fell from Stiles' eye. He didn't care about before, about what they used to be. And Scott shouldn't either.
"We were no one. Maybe i should just be no one again." Scott raised his shivering head up to look at his best friend. "No one at all." He moved the flare out, preparing to drop it and blow himself up along with his pain.
"Scott, just listen to me, okay? You're not no one. Okay, you're someone. You're-Scott, you're my best friend. Okay? And i need you." There was a desperation to Stiles tone, a pleading for his best friend to understand, and to show that he understood his pain too. "Scott, you're my brother." Stiles glanced down, taking in a deep breath. "Alright so. . . ." He slowly stepped into the puddle of gasoline surrounding his best friend, his voice and body shaking with every word. "So if you're going to do this then-" He cautiously moved his hand to Scotts, grasping the flare and Scotts cold skin. "I think you're just gonna have to take me with you."
Adrianna pulled her cousin to her, hugging her side tightly as they watched the two broken boys converse.
Stiles carefully used both his hands to grab the flare and pull it from Scotts tight grasp. Scott let out a whimper, not tearing his eyes from Stiles'. Stiles threw the flare away from the puddle, it landing on the cement.
Scotts breath became quick as he hyperventilated. He was coming out of the haze but he knew every word he said was true, he knew he meant it, and he knew how broken he was for saying them.
"No!" Lydia suddenly screamed, running towards the boys in the middle of the puddle.
Adrianna's eyes went wide as she saw the flare being pushed into the puddle by the soft wind. Her reflexes kicked in and she wrapped herself around Allison, teleporting to the other side of the puddle as a large flame blew up.
They landed on their backs on the pavement next to the boys, their heads knocking against the ground roughly.
Adrianna looked up to the flames, a darkness simmering around them. A creature rose in the flames, hooded by dark robes. Although she knew what it was as she caught a glimpse of its slashed up face.
The darach.
