The black, seemingly empty, cardboard box collided against the wall in a solid smash. There was almost a small black smudge from where it had made impact with the serene whiteness.
Adrianna let out a frustrated breath that verged on a growl. Her slender fingers combed through her long, thick light brown hair.
All day it as been like this. A high-pitched buzzing in her ears, an overwhelming sadness and a painful headache that has spread to the entirety of her body. No pain medication nor alcohol was helping, not even dulling the throbbing of it all. She was on the edge of a cliff in her mind, yet stuck from jumping or retreating. Her hands scrambled for the coffee jug, an incessant need to calm down with the familiar warm liquid. She found a cup and poured what was left of the coffee in it. It was enough. She took a sip of it, her body floating with energy. It helped only a bit.
The doorbell rang from downstairs, the once merry tune flinging around the house. Adrianna huffed and placed the cup down. She walked down the stairs and to the front door, opening it without hesitation.
A newspaper sat on the worn welcome matt.
She frowned, picking it up and looking around the street for any sign of someone who could have put it there. She doesn't get the papers on Sundays.
She closed the door and walked back up the stairs, her eyes reading the front page:
VICTIMS OF MYSTERIOUS ANIMAL ATTACKS ARE PILING UP IN BEACON HILLS. POLICE HAVE NO LEADS.
Adrianna frowned. Why was she getting the papers from a town she left a very, very long time ago? No one knew she was here, at least, not anyone of importance. She looked back down the stairs, a paranoia starting to seep in. It's impossible, no one could know she was here. She shook her head and tore the paper up, throwing it in the bin.

"Maybe it was like spam mail?" Marissa wondered
Adrianna's eyebrows drew together, "Spam mail? That's the best analogy you've got?"
Marissa rolled her eyes, running the shopping cart into the back of Adrianna's legs.
Adrianna chuckled, grabbing a box of cereal and chucking it into the cart.
"Maybe it was that mysterious lover of yours sending it to you?"
Adrianna's frown came back and she spun to face Marissa, "What?"
"Oh don't play dumb. I know you've been getting handwritten letters from someone halfway across the world."
Adrianna laughed, a nervous laugh, but enough to cover up the momentary slip up. "It's not a lover M, for gods sakes"
Marissa shrugged, putting another item in the cart. "Say whatever you need that will let you sleep at night"
Adrianna rolled her eyes, "Can you grab the noodles?"
Marissa nodded, immediately grabbing the Asian packet and throwing it into the cart with everything else.
"What if it wasn't a mistake?"
Marissa frowned, "What's the worst thing that could happen if it wasn't? So what, you get the mail on the wrong day"
Adrianne feigned an amused smile. She didn't want to think about the possibilities. It was dangerous, not just for her.
Marissa sighed, throwing some chips into the cart. "Look, don't stress over it. It obviously was a mistake. Wrong day, wrong house."
Adrianna pulled her bottom lip between her teeth, her head slowly nodding. Somehow she knew it wasn't a coincidence.
---
"Is that it?" Adrianna asked, placing a few bags on the counter.
"Uh-" Marissa surveyed the bags on the bench. She clicked her tongue in realisation, "Potatoes. I'll be back"
Adrianna shook her head. She grabbed the closest bag to her and started un-packing it's contents. She hadn't done the groceries for a while and it showed as she opened up the nearly empty pantry. That mad headache had just been drilling into her for days that she had forgotten about nearly everything she needed to do.
She folded up the bags that she just emptied, placing them to the side to make more room on the counter. She grabbed the cereal that Marissa kept eating every time she was over and turned to find a place in the pantry for it.
The overwhelming headache suddenly burst back into her temples likes fireworks. Adrianna yelled, the box slipping from her fingers. She slammed her hands against her head. Her body started to heat up, to a point where she wanted to rip all her clothes off. A high frequency ringing rang through her head, bouncing off her skull. She dropped to her knees. Blood was oozing from her ears from the sound.
A voice made it's way through the ringing, through the pain. An awfully familiar voice.
"I can't do this myself. Chris. Help me"
A heavy breathing. Tears mixed with words.
"Now"
Adrianna screamed. It was full sorrow and pain and confusion. She felt a blade forcing its way into her heart. She felt the blood seeping down her skin. She gasped for air that was evading her lungs. Her eyes slowly moving down to her chest to see the blood pooling.
"Adrianna!" Marissa came running towards her, catching her just as she fell. "Oh my god"
Adrianna gasped, her body way past the temperature it should be. Her head was still ringing, so goddamn loud. Her body screamed for release.
Someone she used to know has died.
