Chapter Eight:

Reese's POV:

Caleb had told me all about Raven and how she had lied to keep him out of trouble. I still couldn't understand why she would do something like that. I was officially interested in knowing more about her. She wasn't cutthroat like most of the female population and from what Caleb told me she didn't want to get popularity the easy way. It seemed she wanted to earn the respect of her peers, the same peers that had tormented her just three years ago. I was sure I wouldn't be able to even smile at them, if I was in her place.

"She's something else," I said, at lunch the next day. I was looking at her, where she sat with redheaded friend and a guy who I was told was named Gabriel. He was telling them a story pretty animatedly. I didn't really care, but Raven seemed enthralled. The guys had been talking about her, since the incident yesterday and I had been thinking about her all night, last night. She was a puzzle of a girl and I was eager to figure her out.

"So, Caleb, what's your take on her? Do you think she's sincere or was she just lying to you?" I asked him. I wanted to believe she was different, but so many girls had tried to fool me of that. I still couldn't trust her, not yet.

"Well, she lied for me and she didn't have to. Oh, did I tell she told the principal that she would make sure I got to class on time, but then told me later that she wouldn't walk me because she didn't want me to think she liked me. She's something else, I'll give you that, Reese." Caleb was looking at her as well.

"She wasn't afraid of me. I don't understand why," Dane finally spoke. We all looked at him. "I don't know what happened, she's just so pretty and then she pushed her boobs up like that, though I don't think she meant to, but my mind just went blank. She interrupted me, which threw me off. I was going to tell her to back off and not to start something she wasn't sure she could finish, but she cut me off and I was just shocked." He sighed in frustration.

I knew what he meant she's a firecracker and she went off on Dane. We had been watching and Andrew had found it amusing, until Dane stopped talking for a full day. That's why Caleb went after Raven yesterday. I was still amazed that he tackled her like that.

I didn't know what she was up to, but I was kind of starting to root for her.

Raven stood up and made her way over to our table. The guys got quiet as they noticed her approach. The rest of the student body tried to pretend they weren't watching, but I knew they were. This was going to be fun.

Raven's POV:

I was not only vaguely aware of Reese's eyes watching us, I was completely aware of it. He was watching me, like I was some rare bird he had just found and he was studying me in my natural habitat. Not to mention, Caleb kept looking over at me as well. I was finally fed up with it and I stood up to go and give him a close encounter of the angry kind.

The chaotic noise of the lunchroom dimmed, I knew they were eager to see what I would do. I was like a celebrity now and it wasn't half bad, but it wasn't all good either. I reached the table that the Argonauts were seated at.

"Here I am, now what do you want?" I said. I hadn't known what I was going to say when I got to the table, but there it was and there was no taking it back without looking stupid. They looked dumbfounded. I rolled my eyes. "Reese, I'm not blind, but even if I was I would still be able to tell that you've been staring at me. Why?"

"You're one interesting girl, Raven. Thank you for what you did for Caleb yesterday. I doubt he said so himself."

I shrugged.
