The Cut was coming up after our New Years break. I was nervous. Our routine was definitely our best one by far, the most emotionally involved, and it had incorporated all of the intense contemporary training we'd been doing here at NBC. I was confident in the moves and in our abilities, and in our connection and emotions, but both of us were tired. You could feel it, even under the music's power. You could see it, in the transitions between our movements. Life had returned to normality, at least, our definition of it. Interviews, recordings, the blurred distortion between friends and fans. We both weren't ready to go home, but we both missed home, a lot. And we had to miss Christmas with our families, which was taking a big toll on all of the dancers. NBC was apologetic, but as it looked, we were going to be snowed in for the holiday, so even if we did have tickets for a flight out, there was little chance the plane was getting off of the ground. I knew it was hitting Kaycee especially hard, though. She missed L.A. and her friends, she hated coming to Blue Valley and already having to leave it, and she was struggling with being away from Kylie and Laura and Devon so much, not to mention Will, Janelle, Tricia, and Matt. Kaycee was missing home. Big time.
She was asleep on the couch when I went to work out with Michael, and on the way back up, I got a call from Kylie. "Hey Kylie, what's up?"
"Sean," she cut right to the point, "How's my sister?"
"Kaycee? She's fine, why, is everything ok?" I asked, getting worried all of a sudden. Had Kaycee told Kylie something was wrong? In a weird, selfish way, I almost didn't want Laura and the rest of the Rices to come out to New York to us.....I wanted to be the one to take care of Kaycee. I wanted her to be fine just being with me. "Well," Kylie hesitated. "I think she's just homesick. I've been talking to her recently, and she just seems...sad. This is like, the best experience ever for you guys, and I feel like all she wants to talk about is how life is here."
"Well, she knows how things are going here and you know how humble she is," I offered. "Maybe she just feels more comfortable talking about stuff in her element. We're both way out of our league here."
"That's the thing, Sean," Kylie sighed. "This place is just as much your home as it is L.A. You grew up here on both sides, the grit and the spotlight. And you travel way more than she does for bookings and conventions....you know how timid she is to go places away from home. She could've gone to Europe a lot time ago, but she's always wanted to keep her life here in L.A. I just feel bad she had to grow up all at once."
"Me too," I said, regretting all jealous thoughts I had earlier. "Is there any way you guys can come here for the holidays? You could make it a nice vacation-"
"Tried," she said flatly. "They're not accepting any flights into the ports anywhere on the upper East Coast. We even tried a private jet, and you know how Mom is with that kind of stuff." Laura hated using their fame for anything, and she'd made it a point to raise Kaycee with the most down-to-earth morals, whereas I wasn't against first class if it was offered. That was another reason why I loved Kaycee so much. She was so down to earth, and she was the fresh breath of air that the industry needed. Pure, untouched, realism. Something that was so hard to find, and often undervalued. I was lucky to have her to ground me. You saw what happened when I didn't. I sighed. I didn't want Kaycee to have a bad Christmas. "How's she doing with her schoolwork?" Kylie asked, cutting me out of my thoughts. "Finished everything, she's way ahead of me," I said. "She really attacked it well. I on the other hand, could use some extra pushing." Kylie laughed. "Just take care of her for us, ok Sean? She could really use you now, and you her. The holidays are about being together, right?" I nodded, but realized she couldn't hear me, so I echoed a yes aloud. "I'm not saying go all out, but just remind her that L.A. is always gonna be with her for me? Thanks, Sean. You're the best," she said, and then she clicked off before I could say another word.
