The smell of cooking hamburgers and hotdogs wafted into my nostrils the moment Theo and I walked outside. It smelled good, and seeing Keon standing at the grill without a shirt on, flipping hamburgers, was an interesting sight.
Theo bumped my hip with his and smiled before walking over to Marcus.
After watching him and his reaction to Marcus, I turned and walked towards Cayson, who was standing to the side drinking a beer.
He slowly lifted it to his lips and eyed me as I neared. When I reached him, he swallowed then sniffed the air.
I could smell it too. Not the hamburgers and hotdogs. Not the tomatoes and lettuce and buns wrapped up and ready to be put onto our food. Not the smell of alphas or omegas. But the slight hint of roses.
It hadn't hit yet. But it was going to. I wasn't sure how it was supposed to begin. I was never there for any of the omegas to start their heat. By the time they got to me, they were already fully there in the midst of their heat. Then there was me, who had her first heat induced.
I wasn't sure of the protocol.
"Either Marcus is about to go into heat," he turned to face me, "or you are."
I shrugged one shoulder. "I am. But I don't know how this works."
"With how faint the scent is, I doubt it'll come any time today." He held out his beer in offering.
I shook my head. Other than the fact that I was still underage, I never liked the taste of alcohol. It was either too sweet or burned my throat, and neither was something that I enjoyed.
Keon glanced up at me, then down to my abdomen where the threat of my heat slowly curled. When his eyes met mine again, they were glowing ever so slightly. He smiled at me, then brought his attention back down to the food.
Tami and Mia walked out back and gave me a wave before heading in the opposite direction, towards the swinging chairs. More omegas came out, smiled or waved at me, and went to the other swinging chairs by Tami and Mia.
"They like you," Cayson said.
"No," I said, "they're like me."
He flicked my forehead.
I flinched back and covered the area with my hand, glaring at him.
"No," he grinned, "they like you."
I doubted it, but I didn't argue any further. It would go on forever, and as much as I liked to assume I could out-sass either of the two brothers, I knew eventually I'd be the one giving up. Because I knew Keon would join in and it'd just get exhausting arguing with them.
Keon waved me over and I walked over to him. He flipped a few hamburgers before holding the spatula out for me to hold. When I took it, he ruffled my hair and walked to the back door, then into the house.
I stared at the food in horror.
What did he expect me to do? Flip the freaking food? I didn't know how to cook, nor did I know if there was a specific way I was supposed to flip it. How long did it have to stay on each side? Was the slight pink tint in the middle normal? I didn't think it was, but I wasn't sure.
He came back out, saving me from a mental breakdown. He leaned down and kissed my cheek as he took the spatula and slid something else into my hand.
The label on the familiar bottle read Calorsicarius.
They were the pills to stop an omegas heat from surfacing. If I took one, the feeling of my heat would slowly subside and eventually disappear, and I would skip my heat for that month.
