~ Keon's POV ~
The sound of a gunshot made both Cayson and I freeze. For a moment, I wondered if someone had shot at Phoenix, but last we checked, she was still up in her room. We were trying to give her space after what happened with Savvy, but the longer we didn't hear her come down and ask what the hell was going on, the more my nervousness spiked.
'Might want to get out here,' Seth's voice spoke into my mind. 'Fun fact: Your mate has a very angry enemy that wants her dead.'
Cayson's head whipped in my direction, a silent question on his face to see if I had heard him too. When I only stared back at him, a horrified expression fell over both of our faces.
Someone just shot at Phoenix.
We raced out of the house, not even bothering with shutting the door.
Phoenix was supposed to be in her room. She had locked herself in there. The alarms hadn't even fucking gone off to tell us that she was trying to escape. We thought everything was fine, and we were planning on what we were going to do and say to Phoenix in the morning, after she had calmed down.
We'd taken her life too lightly. She was, in fact, an omega. And Savvy had made it perfectly clear that she hated Phoenix. We were just too stupid to see what that truly meant.
Seth had Phoenix by the hand, running in the direction of our house. His eyes searched out the distance beside him, looking and finding the person who was shooting at her. Then he skidded to a stop, pulling Phoenix back and into his chest as another bullet whizzed by - too fucking close for comfort.
"Where," I yelled, my alpha side taking over quicker than anything I'd ever felt before.
When we reached them, I looked down at Phoenix, who was shaking violently, staring off into space. She was terrified, barely standing on her own.
"Don't be dumb," Seth finally said, bringing my attention back up to him. "She'll see you before you see her."
Then hands, that weren't his, forced all of us to the ground as another bullet whizzed overhead. Phoenix looked up at me, her eyes locking with mine, but it didn't seem like she really even saw me.
"Who is it," Cayson asked, standing.
I stood too, wiping the grass stains on my knees. Seth stood and slid Phoenix behind him, protecting her with his body.
Good.
"Who do you think, you idiot?" Seth continued to hold onto Phoenix.
The realization seemed to hit Cayson and I at the same time, and I turned my attention in the direction of where she was. The girl Cayson and I used to love, used to always tell we'd mate with, was coming after our true mate. The one we'd been waiting for, for far too long. Cayson, Savvy, and I hadn't ended on the best of terms, but I never - ever - expected her to come back with such ferociousness and hatred.
"She's fucking dead," I said.
Savvy had stopped shooting, but by the look on Seth's face, she was still there watching.
Everything would have been silent if it hadn't been for my alpha screaming at me to go kill her. It seemed Cayson's alpha was at the surface as well, because he was calm. Too calm. Other than the fact that he was shaking with anger.
I raised my hand and glanced down at it.
Apparently I was too.
"That's fine," I said, finally letting myself go to the part of me that wanted Savvy dead with every part of its being, "prolong that worthless little life of yours then. Alphas like the fucking hunt anyway."
