I wanted to sleep in my own room for the first time in quite a while. No one came after my life again after Savvy. Tracy didn't make a move against me again, nor did I even see her. So I told Keon and Cayson that I wanted one night alone to just write.
I tapped at my keyboard, finally figuring out the words to write. It had been a while, and after logging on during the day, I noticed that a couple people had messaged me, asking where I was and if I was okay. So I filled out an obligatory apology post, and updated people on my life, as far as they needed to know.
The sky had long turned dark outside, and the wind blew lightly into my room, leaving a slight chill in the air. There were no sounds, except for that of wind blowing through branches and the grass below. It was comfortable.
I read through my blog post again, making sure there weren't any grammatical errors. After it was submitted, I looked at jobs. Of course, all of the ones I looked at said no omegas - even the entry level ones. Not surprising. Even if there was a job posted for an omega, it would probably be toilet cleaning in a dirty, run down bar.
I checked the news in the United States. Still no word on the bill that was brought forward to make omegas objects, rather than members of society. It seemed both sides were split down the middle, and the alpha president had nothing to say on the matter. They brought it to vote, but no one side had a clear winner.
I hoped the law didn't pass. I hoped someone would rise up and tell them it was wrong, that we were human beings, just like the rest of them.
I closed my laptop and looked at my window. Maybe I would go sleep with Keon and Cayson. They would still be awake.
Rolling off of the bed, I made my way to the door. I left the room, made my way down the stairs, and the moment I turned to enter the kitchen, something cold pressed against the back of my neck.
I hadn't even noticed her. To be honest, I didn't think that it would ever be her. Either she really wanted to put a gun to my head, or she was ordered to do so.
"You know," I said, raising my arms up, "if Keon and Cayson see you, they're going to kill you."
The gun against the back of my head wavered just the slightest bit, but she didn't respond. Why would she? I knew what was going to happen as well as she did. I just never pegged Mia as the type to follow an alphas orders, unless it came from the ones she worked for.
When the door to the kitchen opened, Keon and Cayson were already aware of what was going on. Their eyes were narrowed into slits as they stared past me to Mia.
"Care to explain when you had the chance to even speak to Tracy," Cayson asked.
I felt Mia move to stand fully behind me, using my body as a shield against the brothers. Like she believed they couldn't reach around me and strangle her.
Why was it, the moment I let my guard down, something shitty happened? Tracy hadn't made a move in weeks, hadn't even done anything to make any of us believe she still wanted my head. For all we knew, she'd given up.
I should have known.
I turned my head to look back at the woman, to see her eyes clenched shut as if warring away all of her thoughts. She had been ordered to kill me. It would be so easy to just ignore that order, even if given another.
'Close your eyes.'
My eyebrows furrowed in confusion at the voice in my head. It wasn't my voice. It was more masculine and assertive. I knew it from somewhere, but I couldn't quite place who it belonged to. For some reason, the filter between minds seemed to distort the words and tone. I knew it wasn't Keon or Cayson. Then...who?
'Phoenix,' the voice said, 'please close your eyes. I'd prefer you not see this.'
I turned my head back to face Keon and Cayson, then closed my eyes. Within seconds, something warm hit the back of my body. Then there was a dull thump.
My eyes flew open, and the moment I turned to look at what happened, Keon grabbed my face and kept me facing forward. Although he didn't look at me, I knew he wanted me to stay standing where I was.
A part of me knew what happened. The other part wanted to block that thought out.
Mia was dead.
"Good listening, Phoenix."
I tried to turn to the voice, but Keon's grip on my face tightened. "How do you expect her to get out of here without seeing that?"
Cayson grabbed my hand and pulled me forward, keeping his eyes on me to make sure I didn't turn. Didn't see what I knew was there.
I might have let my guard down, but it didn't look like the brothers had for a second. They were fully prepared, and so were the men behind me, who I knew instinctively were Seth and Theo. They were somehow always there, making sure to either take down those who attempted to harm me, or help get me out.
The door to the kitchen closed and I finally turned back to the door like I could see through it.
"Morbid curiosity?" Cayson leaned against the door frame and smiled gently down at me.
I shook my head. "Have you ever seen a car accident?"
His eyebrows drew together.
"It's kind of like that," I explained. "I know exactly what happened, but my mind doesn't want to believe it...so I want to look to make sure it's actually what I think it is. Kind of like how you can't take your eyes off of a wreck as it happens because your brain won't let you."
He nodded his head.
"So that's that." I waved my hand. "You know, it was warm for a second there, and I assume it's blood but then again, it could be-"
"Shh." He wrapped me in his arms. "You're rambling."
I knew I was rambling. I was afraid of what had happened behind me. Even thinking about it made a shiver run up my spine.
"After they're done out there," he said, "we can go get you cleaned up."
So I did need cleaned up. There was blood on my back.
"Why didn't you just stop her," I whispered.
"You know why." His eyes never left mine. "Teo couldn't have even stopped that."
Teo.
"What about Seth?"
He shook his head. "No. Seth may be like Teo, but Teo is stronger than Seth. So if Teo couldn't do it, Seth couldn't either."
"Was he the one who spoke in my head?" I needed to keep talking to try and ignore the drying wetness on my back.
Cayson's face went dark for a second before he masked it with a half smile and a shrug.
It didn't seem like he wanted to answer that question. But of course, why would he? No one answered any questions regarding Teo and Seth's different abilities. It was like the topic was taboo, and everyone on earth agreed to not speak about it.
The kitchen door opened and Keon stepped in. "It's fine now. If you want to go shower, you can. I need to talk to Cayson real quick and we'll be up to join you."
I looked between the two of them, then finally just headed upstairs to the room I shared with them. I didn't look at the clothes as I stripped them off and threw them in the trash, and I didn't look at myself in the mirror as I headed towards the shower.
If I saw blood, I'd lose it. Mia had been perfectly normal and kind to me. Hell, she was kind to everyone. So whatever order Tracy had given her, had to have been one she couldn't get around. Mia wasn't a killer. Mia didn't even look like the kind of girl that would hold a gun.
What now, I thought numbly as the hot water began to pelt my back. What's next?
