They didn't come back for two hours. When they did, I stood from the couch to go see them, but Seth grabbed my wrist and kept me from going anywhere near them.
"Don't," he said. "You do not want to see them right now. Let them get cleaned up."
Cleaned up?
Images of the two of them covered in blood filled my mind and my lips pulled down into a disgusted frown. It wasn't a good sight, so I sat back down and waited.
When they appeared in the living room about twenty minutes later, their hair was wet and they were in fresh clothes. Cayson's eyes flitted to me, then away.
Keon just looked downright annoyed.
"She didn't do that on her own accord," Cayson finally said. "She was ordered to kill Phoenix."
It was like my heart sunk to the pit of my stomach. They couldn't have been telling the truth, could they? Savvy had to have been working alone. Who else would have told her to come after me?
"Who," Seth asked.
Keon and Cayson shared a look. Keon's face became more pinched and he turned away, unable to even look at me or in my direction. Cayson couldn't keep his eyes on me. He kept glancing at me, and the moment our eyes locked, he looked away.
Seth stared at Keon and he growled, narrowing his eyes at the other man.
"Don't," Keon hissed.
Cayson sighed and leaned forward, running his fingers through his hair. He didn't seem to want to talk about it, but everyone's eyes were on him and Keon. I wouldn't let them leave without telling me who else wanted me dead. Who told Savvy to come after me and make an attempt at my life.
Theo reached over and grabbed my hand, gently squeezing in some sort of effort to keep me calm. The longer the two of them waited to say who it was, the more irritated I was becoming.
"Unless you killed Savvy before you figured it out," Seth said, "you know exactly who it is. Speaking of, did you kill Savvy?"
Cayson's jaw clenched. "I think you two should go home. We need to talk to Phoenix."
Seth's eyebrows raised, but he didn't comment. It took him a minute, but he stood and stretched his arms high above his head like he had no care in the world. It didn't really have anything to do with him and Theo, but for some reason, I would have liked them to be there.
But they ended up leaving, and I sat motionless in the living room, waiting for whatever it was they wanted to say.
Keon still wouldn't look at me. His eyes were on the floor, his jaw clenched.
Cayson looked me right in the eye. "We don't want you thinking of us any differently, just because of what we've done."
The thought of them killing Savvy didn't bother me. Maybe it should have. But they did it to protect me. I could never fault them for that.
The looks on their faces before I disappeared behind the door frightened me. Of course it did. I'd never seen the two of them so overcome with anger that they had no humanity left to speak of. Their eyes had become dead, but the glow behind them showed not only were they fully alive, but they were one hundred percent ready to kill.
"Savvy is dead," he finally said.
The room went silent. I figured they'd say that.
I wondered how they did it, and the thoughts that flitted through my mind made me almost cringe away. There was a reason why Seth wouldn't let me go see them when they got home. Whether that be because they were covered in blood, dirt, or tears...of course I wouldn't want to see it.
