"-shouldn't have come." Keon's voice was silent, whispering as if trying not to wake me from my drug-induced sleep.
My body felt heavy, full of lead and sticky with sweat. My heat had passed, but it felt like I endured it awake. My eyes seemed to be glued shut, and I probably still looked dead to the world, even though I was awake.
"I don't think she will blame you for your mother's faults," Cayson whispered back. "She isn't that type of person."
A sigh.
"It's not just that," Keon said back. "Seth was right. The smell of her heat is different from others. It's strong, and even my mother's eyes were glowing like she was enjoying the scent of it. If any other alpha smells that, they're going to go crazy. If we don't mark her-"
"We aren't forcing her to take our mark," Cayson hissed. "Don't be stupid, Keon. She barely trusts us as it is."
I clenched one fist in an attempt to wake myself up. I wasn't sure what they were talking about, but I didn't like the fact that Keon was possibly thinking about forcibly marking me. Then again, I came into the conversation late, so I wasn't sure what they were talking about beforehand.
"I'm not going to, you idiot." Keon raised his voice ever so slightly, but caught himself and quieted. "But if the scent of her heat keeps getting stronger, and she's not marked, she's going to be attracting a lot more than just us."
Silence.
I tried again to move, but could only move the tips of my fingers.
"Theo almost lost it."
My breath hitched. Theo? He almost lost it in front of Marcus? I knew he liked the scent, but for him to almost lose all self control? And with me? I didn't have the right anatomy for Theo, so how...
"I know." Cayson sighed. "He feels shitty about it also, like she'd remember him acting that way."
What way? How was Theo acting? Obviously nothing terrible happened, since they were still talking about him in present tense. But it was bad enough to where he felt bad?
I needed to wake up, ask what the hell happened. If I did something wrong or if it was all just due to my heat.
I clenched my lids and forced my eyes to open. The world was hazy and seemed to spin around my prone form. It wasn't like my last heat. In a way, it was worse.
I closed my eyes again in an effort to get rid of the sudden rush of vertigo.
"He isn't sure why we didn't attack him," Cayson said.
Damn it. I couldn't wake up. It was like I took two too many sleeping pills and was trying to force myself awake after only sleeping an hour.
"Seth was the same." Keon sounded matter-of-fact. "But I don't blame either of them."
Did they blame me then? For my scent? For how strange I apparently was compared to all of the other omegas in the house? Even if I couldn't help the scent I gave off, it was still mine.
Another sigh, but I didn't know who it came from.
I tried opening my eyes again.
It was dark outside, and inside the room only a lamp shone on the bedside. The entire house was silent except for the two brothers somewhere else in the room, deep in hushed conversation.
"I love her."
It felt as if my heart skipped a beat.
"Yeah," there was a smile in Keon's voice, "I love her too. Just sucks she doesn't believe us."
