I touched the bandage around my neck, my eyes on the floor of the laboratory. They were talking, but I couldn't hear a word they spoke.
Savvy threatened me. She put a needle into a cigarette and purposefully waited for me to arrive to shove it in my throat. And what if she did puncture that artery? I didn't know much, but couldn't a person die if not treated right away?
My life had been threatened and the brothers and Teo were standing having a screaming match. Once again, I didn't know what was being said. I blocked everything out.
I'd become too careless. Sure, I changed. But I should have never lost that suspicion of betas and alphas, even though I'd met plenty of them that could change my mind. I knew Savvy wanted Keon and Cayson. So why didn't I think she would come back and do something towards me?
Maybe because of the way she smiled at me the first time me met? She didn't seem like the type to become so...psychotic.
She could have killed me if she wanted to. She could have hidden a knife and the moment I turned around, she could have killed me.
"Look at your goddamn mate," Teo growled.
It went silent, and I knew they were looking at me. I didn't have the energy to look up. I just continued to stare at the floor, my hand over the bandage.
"She is your priority, not some long lost friendship you had with that woman. We shouldn't be arguing about this, and I shouldn't be the one to tell you two that the fact that you didn't kill her when you had the chance was completely and utterly fucked up on your end."
I didn't move, but my blood seemed to turn to ice.
"If my mate ever got hurt," Teo's voice was becoming deeper, "I would see to it that person never had a chance to hurt her again."
Silence again.
My marks throbbed on my shoulders, mocking me.
Something crashed to the floor and I jumped, my eyes flying up to see broken glass littering the floor and blood sprouting up on Keon's hand.
Cayson's jaw was tight as he looked down at the glass. His hands were in fists at his sides.
"You don't think we know that," Cayson finally asked, raising his head and looking Teo straight in the eye. "My priority was to make sure Phoenix was okay. My brother and I will take care of Savvy."
"The only way to stop her from coming after Phoenix again is if you kill her." Teo's eyes were so bright, I wondered if any part of his humanity was left to speak.
"When we want you in our affairs, we'll be sure to ask you." Keon spoke through clenched teeth.
"You've inadvertently placed me in the middle of your affairs, Keon." Teo turned away from them to grab his tablet. "What you do is up to you, of course. But Savvy will find a way to kill Phoenix. And if she does, what will you do?"
Silence, this time much more tangible. Keon and Cayson both looked at me, imagining what, I wasn't sure. Maybe my death. What that would do to them.
It was never easy to lose your mate. From what I've read, it hurts as if you were losing your own life.
The brothers shared a look.
"She's also poisoned."
Their heads whipped around to stare at Teo, whose eyes were on his tablet. He didn't flinch when they looked at him like I did. He merely glanced up.
"I'm assuming it was done around the time her uterus was removed." He stood and walked over to me, holding out the tablet so I could look at pictures of my blood under the microscope.
