The next morning, my first thought was: What the fuck did I do? Why the hell did I allow myself to give into them time and time again? It wasn't the fact that I ached everywhere, it was the fact that they suddenly began expecting me to stay.
I wanted to stay with them, don't get me wrong. But the fact of the matter was, I still wasn't sure if I wanted to be their mate. There would be so much backlash for the two of them. Mating an omega was dirty, to say the least.
I couldn't let it happen again. I couldn't allow them to see me like that, nor expect me to give in. If they asked why, I'd explain it to the best of my abilities. As much as the bond called, and as much as my general like was growing into something foreign and untouchable, they did not deserve an omega. They deserved an alpha.
I ran my fingers through my hair and sat down at the kitchen table, staring at my laptop.
Both men had left early that morning. Cayson was the attending doctor to a patient that was going to see Keon that day, so they both had to be there for pre and post op. So, for the first time since I came to their house, they were both gone at the same time, which gave me time to think.
Thinking was bad.
Tami walked into the kitchen and smiled at me. "Hello, Phoenix. Are you feeling okay?"
I looked up at her and shrugged one shoulder.
She glanced at my neck, then back up into my eyes.
I knew what she was looking for. And the fact that she knew to look for the mark was enough to make my face heat in embarrassment. She'd heard us last night, and expected me to come out of it marked.
Pity for her.
"Would you like anything to eat," she asked. "Toast? Oatmeal?"
I still felt weird about other omegas tending to me like I was something more than them.
"No," I said. "But thank you."
She fidgeted and wrung her hands together, staring at me like she wanted to say something, but just didn't know how to go about saying it. I wasn't planning on helping her, either. I didn't want to talk about it. I was too busy overthinking about it to try and explain it to her.
I stared at her for only a moment longer before turning my attention back to the laptop screen. I liked to read comments on my blogs, especially by those who I knew were alphas.
SundayDance24: Oooh. Is our blogger in love?
I shook my head.
FlirtyThirty: What don't you understand, exactly? Life, at least for you, has been laid out on a silver platter.
That one was an omega. I could tell by the writing.
Then there was a new person that had suddenly began reading and commenting on my posts.
LovingO247: Just let whatever it is happen and see where it gets you. You're too hard on yourself.
My eyebrows furrowed. I couldn't quite place if the commenter was an alpha, beta, or omega, but whoever it was seemed to know me pretty well for only recently following me.
I didn't reply to any of the comments. I rarely did.
When I looked up, Tami was gone and there was another girl standing there. She was staring at me in confusion, her head tilted. She was beautiful for a beta, with big sky blue eyes and platinum blonde hair that cascaded down to her waist in perfect waves.
"Uhm." She blinked, looked at the laptop, then back at me. "Who are you?"
I raised an eyebrow. "Who are you?"
She pursed her full lips and crossed her arms, looking around the kitchen for something. She didn't reply to my question. She just continued to look around, then finally her eyes landed back on me.
"Where are Keon and Cayson," she asked.
I raised my chin. "Work. I can text them and let them know you're here if you give me your name."
She smiled slightly. "Just tell them their mate is here. They'll know."
I felt my heart constrict and my stomach curl. Their...what? Their mate?
I shook my head, confused. When I opened my mouth to ask what the hell she meant, Keon walked in with Cayson close behind.
They didn't even notice her for a good five seconds, but when they did, their smiles fell.
"Hey." She smiled, walking over to them. She wrapped them both in a hug and buried her face in Keon's neck. "I've missed you guys."
Cayson looked horrified. Keon, however, looked like someone just slapped him across the face. They both looked up at me for my reaction, but I didn't give any. I just remained seated, legs crossed, and eyes on the woman who considered them her mates.
Keon stepped away from her. "Savvy...why are you-"
Savvy, huh?
I raised my eyebrows at the two of them. "Your mate here just showed up looking for you."
Savvy turned and looked at me over her shoulder, smiling like a fucking princess. She had no idea who I was, only that I was an omega seated at their table. There was nothing hostile about her, except for the fact that she continued to cling onto Cayson.
Cayson shook his head. "She isn't our-"
She slapped him playfully on the chest. "Not yet, silly. You promised that, when you two were ready, you'd mate with me."
I clenched my teeth together so hard that my jaw hurt. She was like a giddy school girl, ready to mate with her...what? Lovers? Ex-lovers? Ex-boyfriends? What the hell were they, exactly?
Cayson pulled away from her and looked back and forth between me and her. His face had gone pale and he kept clenching and unclenching his fists.
Why weren't they saying anything? They were just standing there, looking at Miss Princess, then me, then back to Miss Princess. Either they were going to mate with her, or they weren't. But they weren't saying a damn thing.
I cleared my throat and stood, closing the laptop lid and lifting it off the table. My fingers were numb and my legs weren't working in the way I wanted them to. They were shaking. I heard my heartbeat, loud and painful in my ears.
I turned away from the three of them.
Keon took a step towards me. "Phoenix, this-"
I glanced back at him and shook my head to shut him up, before turning back and leaving the kitchen.
They didn't try to stop me. They didn't say a word. But I did hear Savvy.
"Cute little omega," she said. "Too bad that's all she is."
I got up to my room, closed and locked the door, then flung my laptop across the room, watching as it slammed hard against the wall across from me. The screen broke from the keyboard, and the screen shattered. The light behind it blinked twice, then died.
I stared at it, breathing heavily.
Fuck, I thought.
Why was I getting so damn angry? So what if they had a mate already? So what if they promised their lives to someone else? It's what I wanted from the beginning, wasn't it? I wanted to leave, wanted to be on my own with them continuing to pay for my pills.
Why was knowing there was a beautiful woman downstairs, hanging off of them, bothering me? My stomach was in knots and my chest hurt.
Is it because they played me? Used me to get what they wanted out of me? They'd told me since the beginning that they wanted sex. What if that was true, and them wanting to mate with me was just them trying to get me to soften up to them?
My eyes stung, but I didn't cry. I refused to.
I sat down on the floor and dug my nails into my scalp.
"Fuck," I whispered. What had I done?
