Rue Scarce

I head out of my apartment, closing the door behind me. But when I arrived at the elevator, it slid open and the person standing in front of me completely took my breath away.

We both stared at each other in shock, both consumed by confusion and surprise. The doors were about to slide close but the person pushed it open, not leaving his eyes off of me.

"This is a surprise. I didn't think you would be my new neighbor."

I stared at him in disbelief and held my palm out.

"My card, now."

He raised his eyebrows in amusement and his smirk stretched across his face.

"Easy there, little wolf. You work for Emery Publishing Company, right?"

I frowned.

"How--"

"I'll give you lift. I'm also on my way there."

I was about to protest when he grabbed on my wrist and pulled me in the elevator with him.

"I asked for my card, not a drive." I mumble as we descend.

The doors opened by the garage and he heads for the black BMW just a few cars before mine.

"You want it back? Then do as I say." His smirk widened as he glanced at the passenger seat.

I groaned and pushed myself inside. He turned the engines on and drove off. The drive was silent and awkward but he turned the stereo on to classical music that it calmed the tension.

I gripped the string of my bag in hand the moment he entered the vicinity. He parked the car in the garage and I didn't wait for him to tell me to step out.

We walked towards the entrance and I noticed most eyes were on us both. I watched his every step as he placed his card on the scanner but gave me a wink.

"She's with me." He told the security guard.

The man nods and we both walked through.

I'm consumed with curiosity by now. What is this man doing in this building? I thought he was just dropping me off and here he walks through security without further ado? Who is he?

The stares give me the uncomfortable vibe but I didn't mind it too much to shiver under them.

He opened a door with a placard written 'office' and I stopped in my tracks but he grabbed my hand and pulled me in.

"Um, I'm not certain what to make this of." I grumbled, scanning my eyes in the room.

He didn't speak and I watched him walk his way towards the desk.

"Just a minute."

I blinked and looked up at the large bookshelves filled with different kinds of books. Some I have already read from the Leighton Manor and some are extremely familiar.

"Here."

I snapped out of my own world when the man appeared beside me and in between his index and middle fingers is my card.
