Lance was amazing. He was strong, smart, and worked well with others. He even looked good. He was, and always would be, amazing.
But Lance didn't like to flaunt it. Lance didn't let it get to his head. But year after year of being told he was amazing, Lance let it get to his head.
He was amazing and he was going to own it. He was gonna own it. Was.
His best friend, named Skylar, saw the change and thought it was horrible. There was a while where he tolerated it and only let small remarks on it slip.
But arrogance and narcissism aren't good traits in a friend. Skylar cut off his friendship. He dumped Lance as a friend and quickly found other people to hang out with.
Lance was heartbroken. In all his perfectness he was still imperfect. He was rude and mean and it was clear why Skylar didn't like him anymore.
Lance changed again. He might've lost Skylar forever but he made new friends. He toned down his awesomeness.
He turned into Lance. Dumb, funny, and can't do shit for his life. He was no longer amazing but Lance was okay with this.
He met Hunk and went to the garrison. He met Pidge and became friends with them to. They were so good at being friends, they were a whole power trio.
At the garrison he met Keith, his rival. Lance willingly forgot about his past. He always bit his tongue when he wanted to say something smart.
He always crashed the ship and secretly failed. At night though he worked hard to further what he knew.
He craved information and a good education. He had book upon book to learn from.
Whenever he went home on vacation he continued practicing his fighting too. He worked so hard to be so good only to pretend he was so bad.
No one knew Lance was perfect. Even when they all went and joined Voltron. None of them knew that Lance could hack better than Pidge and could fight better than Keith.
Good, Lance had thought. I don't want them too.
But apparently Lance wasn't that great at hiding it. He wasn't so good at acting. But Lance really didn't want to lose anymore friends.
So when Keith and Lance trained Lance always failed. No matter how easy Keith made it, no matter how exposed and easy it would be to win, Lance made sure he always ended up on the ground empty handed.
Today was no exception to that. They had been caught in a pretty lengthy sword fight, because Lance wanted to have some fun, before Lance was on the ground, Keith's sword to his neck.
Both of them were hot and sweaty. Keith took of his helmet and dropped his sword. Lance made a few jokes before also taking off his helmet.
The two sat in the ground, trying to catch their breaths. Lance laid down and, after a while, Keith did to.
It was silent for a solid five minutes before Keith asked, "why do you keep purposefully failing?"
Lance was caught off guard. All he could do was mumble, "what?"
Keith repeated himself, "you know I can tell your losing on purpose, right?" Lance was about to respond when Keith continued, "but why?"
Lance sat up and thought for a moment. Would he tell Keith or would he keep it a secret like he has for so long?
A secret, Lance decided. It would remain a secret.
Lance stood and told Keith, "I'm going to take a shower and then sleep. Good night."
And that was that. Lance walked away and Keith kept thinking. Why would Lance keep failing? Did no one else notice?
Keith wondered until the next day. He told Shiro and the others at the beginning of breakfast, before Lance joined them.
They all looked at each other, confused but trusting Keith's judgement in this. They decided to put it to the test.
That day, training was to spar and have the others judge you on what you could do better.
Pidge would go with Hunk, Shiro would go with Allura. And Keith would go with Lance.
First went Pidge and Hunk. They both needed to work on their strong points. Pidge's speed and smarts and Hunk's raw force and smarts.
Shiro needed to work on technique and, as Pidge said, his 'combos'. Allura needed to work with her agility and her flexibility.
When Keith and Lance trained though, it was all out. They battled for a good 10 minutes before both boys were too tired to go on.
Lance took the final blow and lost. He fell to the ground and pretended to be surprised he lasted so long.
"All that training with Keith really payed off, didn't it?" he joked. The others stared at him from the sidelines and Lance knew something was wrong. "What?" he asked them all.
Shiro stood and spoke, his voice clear and demanding, "we want you to beat Keith. Or else you'll be thrown off this ship and you won't ever go home."
Lance didn't have a choice. He'd have to win and beat Keith. He'd have to show a side of him he really didn't want to show.
Lance huffed and puffed but got into a fighting stance. It was different from the one he normally used and it looked weak.
The only problem was that all his seemingly weak points were his strong points.
When Keith jumped at him and aimed towards the open side, Lance was quick to respond with a small step back and a lunge forward.
There was silence as Lance got Keith. It was a short fight but it was very well executed.
Nothing happened and no one was hurt, Lance wanted to believe though. But as Keith's bloody bodies fell to the ground, lifeless Lance realized that the swords they used were all too real.
Lance felt tears rush to his eyes and he fell to Keith's side. Keith smiled at him and said, sadly, "good job, Lance. I'm proud. Remember, always live up to your full potential."
He was gone. Lance was heartbroken, the whole team was heartbroken. And it was Lance's fault.
It seemed that no mater what, his 'amazing' side would never be more than harmful. It'd would end up hurting Lance and everyone around him.
Lance cursed that side. He went against Keith's words. He refused to live up to his full potential.
Never again would he lose one of his friends. Never again.
