Episode 39: G o n e

"What happened after you took the Nephilim?" War asked Jin, sipping on her apple bourbon. "All those signs, the markings on her skin, even the Devil's Bird--a symbol of disaster in heaven. These are warnings that we had better speed up on finding the Stones. And quickly too. Satan is growing closer each day."

Jin opened his mouth to speak but briefly paused, his eyes glowing pink for a second. War caught his surprised expression and suddenly felt conscious of what she had said.

"Devil's Bird, hm? Don't remember telling you about that incident now. Or have I?"

"You probably did. How else would I know?" She folded her arms.

"Maybe." Jin shrugged and proceeded with his answer. "Well, Hanul's trying to cope with her new identity. Sensitive topic and all. Hell, I can't relate to human emotions so I just think it's an immature banter she's sprouting. She ought to be stronger and in awe at such incredible power." Jin sighed.

"It isn't immature." She shot him a glare. "Of course she'd be scared."

"Are you going to kill her?"

The air got thicker between them as Jin's answer weighed heavy.

"Xapham doesn't have time to chase a Nephilim right now. But there will be others coming after her." She slipped him a subtle clue.

"Hm."

"What's that for?" She glared at Jin's enigmatic expression.

"Well, sometimes I get confused."

"Of?"

"Are the angels who made me suffer for six centuries in this cursed world maybe--well actually, no. I still hate your kind. I despise them to the point where if I didn't know better I would have unleashed my full power to eradicate you all."

Her eyes slightly widened at his raw figure of expression.

"But, sometimes..." he looked down at her, take a sip from his absinthe, "sometimes when I look at you I dare to think otherwise. That maybe not all angels deserve to rot in hell."

She took a sip of her drink and smiled, closing her eyes with relaxation. "Likewise."

"So, what does that mean then?" He leaned closer to her, caging her back against the edge of the bar counter as he rested his arms on either side of her. "Who's good and who's bad. Who's tempting the other? What in the worlds does us meeting here even mean if our sole purpose in creation was to be archenemies of one another?"

War glanced back at his genuine face at such a close range, processing the questions he sprouted at her.

"Who knows." She shrugged, relaxing her muscles with defeat as he too looked down without serving an answer. "But, maybe you and I can set our issues aside, that fosters hope. Maybe we're meant to prove that, together, our kinds can do something great for the world. Maybe that's why I don't agree with having that girl killed either."

Jin's eyes flashed up at her with shock. She uncomfortably glanced around. "I shouldn't have said that...given who I am. But, there's something about that Nephilim, something out of the ordinary that dares to challenge my morals. It's the same thing that makes our duties essential in exterminating her, but also the same thing that has me wondering what she can do for the worlds. How exactly will the balance of nature bend to her liking?"

"So you're saying that Nephilims can either cause great disaster or great fortune to the realms?" Jin sat back on the counter stool, leaning back with relaxation.
