I watch as the sky falls in octagons, crashing around us. I think that I should be afraid of being crushed by a falling piece of the arena, but I'm not. Death is the last thing on my mind at the moment.
I look over at the others and notice the smile on Bella's face with Edward's arm protectivelly around her. They seem to have something that I haven't seen before......hope. Hope is one thing that has been unfamiliar to me all my life. Not once have I seen the relief of hope or have felt it in any coarse of my life. I think it would be nice to one day feel the joy and relief that hope could give me,but I know that it won't come any time soon.
Just as I look back up to the sky, an explosion sounds above us,and I quickly cover my ears. The sound is piercing and my head immediately starts throbbing from the pain. Everyone, including me,crashes to the ground, and covers their heads as sparks fly in all directions. Over to my right,I can see some of the trees ignite into a raging fire, spreading quickly from tree to tree. The lights go out in the whole arena, and we are left alone in the dark except for the fires that are like humans dancing around in the night.
Night....night is darkness.....darkness is........"Daddy!!!" I scream. "Daddy!!!" I feel the cold, emptyness that I haven't felt in so long. Its been years since I'm let myself feel this pain.
"Daddy!!!" I scream at the top of my lungs. All I can see is darkness and a white noise fills my ears. The dark has always been my worst fear since the night I found my fathers crumpled body losing next to the fence.
I keep screaming 'daddy's over and over again until I feel someone touch my arm. My eyes refuse to open in fear that I will see my dads dead body once again.
"Alexandra!!!" I hear someone calling out to me but I can't make out who it is.
"Alexandra!!!" Its louder this time and I realize that its Katniss's voice that I'm hearing. It all seems to come back to me now. The reaping. The chariot ride. The arena. Katniss.
"Katniss?" I say just opening my eyes and looking up at her. Her eyes reflect the fires that devour the trees behind us turning them a burnt metal color. I can see debris falling behind her but its a little blurry.
"We have to go,Alexandra." she says tugging my arm.
I quickly get up and stumble a little on our way to the door of a hovercraft that sits next to the cornucopia.
We rush inside with the door shutting tightly behind us. Katniss drags me inside and helps me to a seat.
The seats line on both sides of the hovercraft making it a lot easier to move about.
I swiftly buckle my seat belt and watch as the world before me begins spinning repeatedly. Everyone is just a blurry object to me and all I hear are noises. Nothing specific can be made out from these voices.
I close my eyes and wait until the hovercraft takes off before opening them again. When I do,everything is clearer. I can hear clearly and my vision is fine. Everything is fine except the throbbing feeling in my temples.
"Are you ok,Alexandra?" I hear Katniss say next to me.
I look over at her and just realise that she's sitting next to me.
"Um....yeah." I say looking away. I know I'm lying but I don't want to tell her the truth. She would never understand the reason why I panicked.
"I heard what you were screaming. What happened back there?" she says concerned.
I look over at her and notice the sadness in her eyes but the strength in them remains. I still don't know if I can tell her even if I wanted to. Telling someone about my dads death is something never wanted to do and never expected to since everyone still thinks that it was because of stupidity that he got electrocuted.
"I....uh....I...." I can't seem to get the words out and I turn away embarrassed. I can't tell her unless I want to give into the cold, darkness that describes that dreadful night.
"My father died when I was 11 from an explosion in the mines in the old District twelve." She says.
I look over at Her and see that her eyes are shining with tears. That is something I never expected. She seemed to me like someone that was strong and capable but this seems to be a different side of her I haven't seen yet. I truly wish I hadn't.
"By the Capitol." I say. I have no words to say right now or I'll break. Breaking is the one thing I don't want to happen. I have avoided it for years and I don't intend on doing it now.
"By the Capitol." She repeats. I think she finally knows the conversation is over when I look away. I can feel her eyes move away from me and over to the other tributes.
"Where are we going?" I hear Hazel say. I can her her quiet sniffling from across from me. She must have been crying.
"The old District 12. It's the last place they'd expect us to be." I hear Katniss say.
The old District 12. I have always wondered what it looked like since the bombs came down three years ago. I lived in District 10 then but I never really remembered it. The only thing I truly remember is common memories like my mom,my dad,my first book, school, and things like that. Nothing specific like most people could remember. Out of those small memories,I remember going to the doctor and being told that I have some defect that dealt with my memory. They said that I could easily forget things. They gave me some sort of shot that knocked me out for 2 days so that they could do some sort of testing on me to see if it could get any better and when I woke up,they said that I had lost 98% of my memory except for necessary things. I don't believe they were testing me to see if I'd get better though. I think it was to erase my memory but what would I know,I was the one knocked out for two full days, but it was entirely worse after the testing. That is all I truly know.
I close my eyes and feel the jostling of the hovercraft as we soar above Panem. I can't stop from thinking about what's probably going on back at the Capitol. They're probably running all through out the control room trying to figure out what happened, while President Snow, who I already know thinks it's Katniss, is plotting a way to find us and kill us. Maybe he already knows where we are going. If so.............. then we are already dead.
....................................................................................................................
"Sir,the power is off. We have absolutely no control over the arena." I man with jet black hair says, while trying not to look the man before him in the eye.
The control room is in chaos with people running about, checking wires and the equipment. Some just stand there in their seats with fear written on their faces.
"Keep trying." the man says. He wears a white rose in his coat pocket which symbolizes his name. His eyes are the color of ash and his thinning hair, the color of snow. He looks like a common man,but there is a fire in his eyes that reminds people of the reason they are in the position they are in now......on their way to death.
"Sir,we have tried several times, but even the best of us can't seem to even get close to turning it back on. It looks like a virus has crept into the system, destroying every access to the arena including the power."
The man with the white rose blooming from his shirt pocket turns away and walks toward a single window in the far side of the room with his thumb nail placed slightly between his cracked lips. He looks out of the window in question of what to do with the girl on fire and her allies that were suppose to be dead. That was the deal he made with people who could destroy him and his nation without a second thought. He suddenly realizes what to do,but although it's risky,he would do it just to kill them all even if it meant dieing himself.
He turns around and approaches the man with the glossy, black hair and looks at him for a moment, showing him the fire that burns deeply inside him. Fear is plain on the other man's face because he knows what happened 5 years ago to another gamemaker. He knows that if he doesn't do what's asked of him, that he'll end up dead.
"Find Jeanine Matthews." is all he says. The other man stands there in shock, but quickly revives from this horrific phrase. He runs out of the control room and down several hallways with fear the only thing left in his mind.
