Chapter 23

     "Alex, it's time to jump." Tris says, standing up.

     I turn around and look out of the door of the train. I see nothing but a drop off until I notice the edge of a roof just beginning to swipe past us. There is a large gap between the train and the building but just enough to at least be able to land safely on top.

     I quickly stand up and watch as Tris and Tobias both jump together out of the train car without any sort of awareness that they may not land on the roof safely. Although they land safely, Tris trips and falls to the ground but gets right back up with the help of Tobias.

     I look down at the gap as I back away from the doorway like it's some hungry animal that is just fixing to pounce. Fear in the only thing in my mind but I know that I must face it. Who else is going to help lead the rebels?

     I close my eyes for a moment to try to get myself together and run out of the train car as fast as I can. I feel weightless for a moment then I hit the ground hard and fall to my knees. I wince at the pain that comes from my left ankle but I ignore it. There are more things to worry about than my throbbing ankle.

     I quickly stand up and look around for the others, but they are no where to be found among the other Dauntless.

     "Bella!!! Edward!!!!!" I begin to shout. Hopefully they'll hear me otherwise they are out of range. "Rudy!!!!!"

     "Alex!!!" I hear someone shout from behind me. I turn around and see Rudy, Bella, Edward, Tris, and Tobias running in my direction. They look out of breath with their hair slightly teased in knots, but at least they're safe.

     "Where the heck were you!?!" I shout to them as they stop in front of me.

     "Tobias and I had to chase after the train car that Rudy, Bella, and Edward were in and signal for them to jump before it passed the roof." Tris says.

      I notice that Rudy is taking quick, small breaths to try to calm himself down. His eyes are a light red and he looks wild.

     "Is he afraid of heights?" I ask Bella who is trying to calm him down.

     "Yes. He wouldn't jump and wanted to go join Leisel so Edward put him on his back and jumped."

     I look over at the opposite side of the roof. The Dauntless are gathered around the ledge with their attention focused on something.

     Tris and Tobias goes on ahead and walks in front of us and the rest of us follow behind. They know more this world a lot more than we do so I don't mind them taking the lead.

     We all ease our way through the dark clothed Dauntless with their strange colored hair and piercings that make them look like the lower class version of the Capitol, if there is such a thing. They all just keep their attention on what I see as a girl with dark skin and hair that stops at her shoulders. She doesn't seem like the other Dauntless that I have seen so far, but I do notice a seal on her right shoulder that I just recently learned is the Dauntless seal, with its flames sprouting up from the bottom of a dark ring.

     I look over at Tris when she suddenly stops, making me bump into her, and notice her reaction. She looks shocked at the realization of something. I quickly recognize what it is when she whispers the name of the person standing before us.

     "Christina."
