(AN: ik it's been about a year and half between season 8 and season 9 but that doesn't work for my story so i'm gonna say it's about a month and a half lol)
I looked around Alexandria, seeing everyone hard at work at rebuilding it.
I had tried so hard to help them, but they insisted I rest.
No one outside of Alexandria besides Maggie knew. And I preferred it that way. I wanted as few people as possible to know. No one else would take me seriously if they knew I was knocked up so young.
I turned as I heard the sound of laughter. Rick, Michonne, and Judith were heading out to the field to play.
Seeing the three of them made my heart ache as I slowly put my hand on my stomach.
I missed Carl.
"Bree!" someone called.
I turned to see Matthew, who was working on the church.
"What do you think?" he asked.
"It looks great so far," I called back. "If I can do anything to help, please let me know."
He chuckled. "Nah, you take care of that baby. We got this."
I groaned quietly in frustration. No one understood how desperately I wanted to work.
If I was supposed to be excited about this baby, the world was making it pretty hard on me.

Eventually, Rick, Michonne, and Judith got back from their outing and Rick walked over to me.
"We're about to go on that run with Hilltop and the Kingdom. You ready?"
Still not too happy with him about the Negan situation, I simply nodded.
"Oh, and you're going to ride in the carriage with Maggie," he added. "It'll be safer for you and the baby there."
I gave a forced smile and he walked off.
Inside, I was screaming.
•••
I silently sat next to Maggie as we travelled to the location of our run.
Maggie leaned over to me.
"How are you feeling?" she asked quietly so no one else would hear.
I rolled my eyes. "I definitely haven't been asked that a hundred times."
Maggie didn't respond and I realized how I sounded.
I sighed. "Sorry."
She gave me an empathetic look and put her hand on my back.
"I know how you feel, honey," she said softly.
I felt small tears prick the corners of my eyes and I turned away from her so she wouldn't see.
"You're scared to be excited," she continued. "And it's hard to be excited because Carl's not here."
"Maggie," I whispered urgently. "Can we please just not talk about it?"
Maggie sighed. "Okay."
I felt her lean away and I took a deep breath, trying to get the lump out of my throat.
I looked around a little self consciously, hoping no one heard us.
