Everyone walked into the ship single file, not saying a word. They took their seats, some wiping tears away to hide them, some looking out the window with glassy eyes.
I couldn't ignore how heavy my heart felt. After watching Peter turn to dust, it'd felt almost this heavy. The only thing keeping it from breaking all the way was the tiny inkling of hope I had. Some hope, any hope, that we could get the stones and reverse what Thanos had done. But now Thanos was dead and the stones were gone...I had no hope.
Rocket had his head down and his ears back, his tail drooping. I sighed, wiping the tears off my cheeks, and walked over to Rocket's seat. I sat down on the ground beside him.
He looked at me from the corner of his eye. "You're the first person I've met, since Groot, who didn't call me names. Who didn't immediately judge me because I'm...I'm a little monster." His lips curled when he said 'monster'. "You looked at me....and you smiled." His whiskers twitched. "You smiled."
I turned my body to him. "Rocket, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry that...that we couldn't get Groot back."
Rocket looked at me, his ears still flattened. "And I'm sorry we couldn't get Peter back. I ain't gonna lie to you, kid....I am sorry."
"Everyone, when we uh....when we get back to earth, we're going to have to...tell Tony." Rhodey said with a sad sigh. "I don't think I can."
"I will," I said. "I'll tell him." Tony and I had spent the last few weeks together, I thought it'd be fair if I told him. And besides, we were both doing this to get Peter back. And now we couldn't.
I'd really lost him.
When the ship touched ground it was nighttime again in New York. Stars lit up the pale building, casting it in haunting light. I walked carefully to the compound, hoping Tony was awake. I didn't want to go to sleep alone yet, I wasn't ready.
The compound felt empty. Completely empty. It was dark, nothing lit save Tony's room. So I pushed the door open slowly, finding him awake and sitting up.
When he saw the look on my face, he slumped against the pillows, his face showing disbelief. "The stones?"
I sat down on the edge of the bed. "Gone. They're gone, Tony. Thanos destroyed them."
Tony didn't respond for a long time. He just looked away, emotions chasing each other across his face. "And...and Thanos?"
"Thor-he, he uh, chopped his head off." I swallowed. "Thanos recognized me. Not from Titan, from somewhere else. He called me...Angel."
Tony frowned. "What?"
"Apparently that's my Red Room name. Not that I remember ever being called that." I rubbed my temples. "Angel of Death. Cliche, but that was what I was...made...to be."
Tony nodded slowly. "So this is it, huh? We can't get them back?"
I felt myself tearing up again. The tears hit my jeans, but I didn't make any attempt to stop them from falling. "We lost. Really lost. It's over."
Tony's head fell back, his eyes closing and tears rolling down his cheeks.
"It's over. We lost."
