About ten minutes of suffering through Tony's flirting, I heard rattling outside of the door.
I sat bolt upright. Here was Peter.
Sure enough, the door swung open and he walked in, DVD player in hand and earphones in. "Hey May," he said without looking in our direction.
May jumped. "Hey! How was school?" She asked.
Peter set down the DVD player and took out his earphones, still not seeing us.
I patiently waited.
"It was okay. There's this crazy car parked outside-" he'd walked into the kitchen and spotted us.
I smiled and waved weakly.
His eyes traveled from me to May to Tony. Then back to me.
And back to Tony. "Ah, Mr. Parker," Tony twirled the walnut date loaf in his fingers.
A few moments previous he'd been choking it down.
Peter's eyes were wide. He smiled. "Um..wha-what're you doing-I'm-I'm-I'm-I'm Peter," he stuttered out.
I think May and Tony were trying to hint him about something. I was, so he was most likely confused as hell.
"It's about time we met," Tony said. "You've been getting my emails, right? Right?"
I saw him giving Peter a squinty eyed look. I nodded enthusiastically to Peter.
He eyed me very suspiciously. "Yea-yeah, regarding the-"
"You didn't tell me about the grant!" May spoke up.
I gave Peter a mock accusatory look.
He looked more confused then ever, crossing his arms. "About the grant!"
"The September Foundation," Tony added.
Peter nodded, eyebrows furrowed. "Right." He was probably wondering why IronMan was sitting in his living room talking to him about something he knew nothing about.
"Yeah, remember when you applied?" Tony went on.
Peter looked from him to May, then to me. "Yeah," he breathed.
"I approved, so now we're in business," Tony gave him another hinting look.
May shifted in her seat. "You didn't tell me anything! What's up with that? You're keeping secrets from me now?"
Peter swallowed hard. "Why, I just know how much you love surprises so I thought I would let you know.." he tilted his head and swung his arms behind him. "Anyway, what did I apply for?"
I smiled at the carpet. Poor kid.
"That's what I'm here to hash out," Tony said.
Peter nodded, eyebrows still furrowed. "Okay, hash-hash it out okay," he muttered.
"You know, it's so hard for me to believe that she's someone's aunt," Tony turned to May.
May looked unamused. "Well, we come in all shapes and sizes, you know."
"This walnut date loaf is exceptional," Tony tried again.
May smiled.
"Let me just stop you there," Peter held one hand in front of him, still looking absolutely bewildered.
I understood. I felt so guilty, too.
Tony turned his attention back to Peter. "Yeah?"
"Has this grant got like..money involved..or whatever?" Peter asked, "No?" He moved his hands around a bit as he talked.
