Jenna and I have never visited our grandparents. We grew up in the country and as soon as we were old enough to leave to the city we did. After leaving Indiana, I told myself I would never come back. Yet here I am, riding in the passenger next to my sister. Jenna insisted she would drive because I had ONE drink at the terminal, ONE. My grandfather died 3 days ago, mysteriously. The local sheriff said he might have had a heart attack but nothing was conclusive yet. Our grandma didn't even call us, the sheriff did; out of respect for my father who has been dead for years but they were good buds. I played candy crush on my phone when I felt the car slowly start to decelerate. I looked up expecting to see a car or an animal. There was nothing but the trees surrounding us and the stars in the sky. I looked at Jenna who was squinting. "There's nothing, why are you slowly down?" I mumbled. "Shhh!" She quickly replied. I put my phone down. "There's something out there." She whispered. I sat up straight. "Jenna, hit the gas. I want to make it home before midnight." At this point, we were going about 20 MPH in a 55 MPH zone. "Jenna!" I yelled and quickly realized how annoyed and tired I was. She sighed and picked up the speed. This time I kept my eyes on the road. She kept looking in her rear view mirror. "What'd you see?" I asked out of curiosity. "I don't really know, it scurried into the woods." "Oh, so it was like. an animal?" "I don't - think so." I shrugged it off and decided I'd take a nap. I hopped into the backseat and threw my hoodie over my head. Jenna listened to the radio and I slowly drifted off. When I woke up, I realized the car was stopped. I shot up in a panic. "Jenna"? She wasn't in the car. How long was I asleep for? I hurried out of the car. I realized we were parked not even half a mile from my grandmother's house. I cursed under my breath. How could she leave me in the car? I grabbed my backpack and knocked on the front door. All the lights were off. "Nana! It's me!" I yelled. It was a windy night and I thought I heard whispers from the woods to my left. "Jenna?" I yelled. I began pounding on the door. "Nana!" The porch light turned on, my tiny grandma slowly opened the door. "Jake? Hi darling." She gave me a hug. "Where's Jenna? Is she upstairs?" I asked. "Jenna isn't here babe, what do ya mean?" My Nana wiped her sleepy eyes. "Don't. It's not funny." I rushed in, expecting to find my stupid sister.
She put her hands on her hips. "Are you guys trying to prank me?" She let out a loud laugh. "Stop. No, where is she!" I was beginning to get annoyed. My Nana's face turned serious. "Honey, I haven't seen Jenna in years. What's going on?"
I ran back out towards the front of the house. "Where you going!" My Nana yelled after me. "I'm going to get my phone, call Jenna and ask where where the F*ck she ! -"
The car was gone. My legs felt numb.
