Thirty minutes had gone by and it became obvious that I was not going to get any sleep until I got myself a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I crawled out of bed, put my slides on and made my way to the door trying not to step over my school papers which were sprawled out all over the floor. Walking around my old mostly wooden house at night was something that always gave me the creeps and the cold fall winds flowing through my open windows did nothing to help. It was very dark and almost too quiet, chilly and a little bit eerie. I was used to being alone at night, making my own dinners, hanging out with friends smoking pot, or just being able to relax. As I approached the kitchen I noticed that my front door was curiously wide open and went to lock it and to my surprise, my mother never came home. It was around 11:30 PM, usually, she would have been home by this time. I instantly felt a chill run down my spine and went into panic mode, locking the door and running back to my room almost totally out of breath. While I did not mind being alone most of the time, it did not take much to spook me and this was a little bit more than a strange sound or my dog jumping running into my room and attacking me for attention. Becoming restless again, I decided that I was being irrational and so I went back for my cereal again. It was almost midnight at this point and my mother had still not come home but I figured she must have just been working late. My kitchen was completely dark and it became difficult to even find the door handle to the fridge. I went to grab a bowl and had noticed the cabinet was also left open and a bag of chips was left out on the counter. Too many small things were out of the ordinary and I didn't want to get paranoid so I ignored it. From the hallway connecting to my kitchen, I heard the doorknob turning to my basement door. My heart sank to the floor, I felt every hair on my body become erect, and I let out a short gasp, in a state of total fear. Living alone with my mother, in the middle of the woods, a few miles away from any sort of civilization and being a horror fanatic caused me to realize this could not be anything but truly awful. I dropped the carton of milk on the floor and ran to the bathroom, locking the door. It was nothing but darkness, complete silence, I could hear my heart beating and drops of my sweat hitting the floor. This is when the nightmare began. I could hear the stairs leading up to the second floor of the house creaking. I will never forget the sounds this woman was making. Cackling like some sort of hyena, laughing like the most evil of all witches, and letting out shrill screams at the top of her lungs. I couldn't believe this was happening and tried to gain my composure and call the police. My phone was dead and I started to panic. Quickly the footsteps retreated down the stairs and the yelling continued, dishes began to hit the floor, doors were opening and closing, things were thrown and I had no idea what sinister woman was inside my home. What had felt like an eternity had gone by and I figured the coast was clear. I slowly crept through my house, each step taken with the thought that it could be my last. I was still the most scared I had ever been in my life at this point, totally filled with horror. My back door was open and I figured maybe she had left through it. I turned on the lights to my porch to see her sitting there. The most disturbing image I had ever seen was right before me. In her lands laid my dog, mutilated and mangled. Looking down at the lifeless limp german shepherd she was playing with it with a sick twisted smile on her face. She was barefoot, wearing raggedy clothes and had her gray hair in a mess. I let out the loudest most terrifying scream I have ever let when she snapped up at me, throwing my dog away like it was a toy. I was able to slam the glass door shut before she had finished darting towards me. She stared at me for a few seconds, turning her head and putting on a sick smile with the teeth that she had left. Her menacing blue eyes and wrinkled face gazed through the glass into my soul and she began to bang on the glass, screaming with no sense. I stood there frozen in fear, deeply disturbed but mustered up the strength to run for the other side of the house, as her banging and screaming continued. I got on my bike and as fast as I could, got away from the house and never looked back. I was still breathing as if I just finished a marathon and began to cry uncontrollably. I had never experienced fear like that before and could not get the image of her face pressing into the glass starring at me and the thought of what she would have done to me. Luckily, my friend left his door unlocked and I got into his house to spend the night. I woke him up to tell him everything that had happened and he comforted me the whole night. Not being able to sleep I was able to see the sunrise and made some tea and toast for breakfast. I put on the TV for some noise to distract my mind and the news was left on. My eyes opened wide, and my heart sank deep as it had before. On the screen read the headline: "Woman wanted and on the run for murder in the Canalanka area." The image of the woman appeared on the screen and a news reporter was explaining the gruesome murders that had occurred last night in my town. They believed it was on a drug craze and that it was an violent act of pure impulse. I couldn't believe I was alive at this point. Immediately I went to the police station, calling my mom, explaining what happened to me. The whole time as I sat there waiting, looking on my phone at the pictures of the victims the horror that they must have gone through. I will never forget that image of her sitting there playing with my dog, her smile, and those screams.
