Back in 2003 we lived on the same street to a man who was really nice to everyone in the neighbourhood. He was really friendly person, attended church every Sunday and helped the community out in any way he could even offering me and my sister rides to school on rainy days. My sister at the time being 15 thought he was really creepy, he always complemented her on how beautiful she was, I would tease her about it just to end up getting punched on my arm.
After some time we saw 3 police cars surrounding his house they brought the man out in hand cuffs. Everyone in my neighbourhood came out and watched as they took him out of his home and into the squad car, we where all confused as to what was going on. News broke out that the man was sexually abusing little girls at the church he was attending. The man managed to make bond and was released from jail until his court hearing. My parents told us to stay far away from him since he was a danger to children.
A week later police surround his home again, going outside and checking what was happening the man was denying officers entry to his home even with a search warrant and eventually resisted arrest as he was kicking and screaming. In the back of the cruiser the man was hysterical banging his head on the glass. The officers came out with a desk top monitor, but what shocked us all was when a little girl stepped out. She was covered in a blanket and police escorting her into another car. I remember the crowd of adults upon seeing the girl, began rushing the car the man was in. Police quickly surrounded the area and one of the cops addressed the public by saying "Justice will be served!" as he got in the car and sped off.
Being 10 at the time I didn't really pay much attention to the trial, after it was over and sentencing was handed down to the bastard, unable to cope with the sentence he ended up hanging himself in his cell. It was sad to see a little girl being mental and physically scarred from someone who we thought was a good man and who we trusted, we never got full details as of who she was or what happened to her, but hopefully she is alright.
One thing that bugs me till this day was that my sister and I where very vulnerable when all this was happening, those small complements he gave my sister made a huge impact on her. We both couldn't trust anyone and till this day we still don't, thinking back the man could of one day while giving us a ride not taken us to school. He could of taken us back to his house and done unspeakable things to us. Instead of sharing my experience of how was it like to live near a pedophile, it would of been how my sister and I survived a predator.
