I woke up in a small room, on what looked like a hospital bed. I had an IV in my arm and a monitor suctioned to my chest. I plucked off the suction cup then removed the tape holding the IV in place, then pulled out the IV.
I was dressed in a pair of black joggers and blue tennis shoes. There was a black t-shirt and a blue bomber jacket draped over the chair next to my bed.
I swung my legs over the side of the bed and snatched the shirt off the chair and slid it over my bare chest. I stood up and took in my surroundings.
My old clothes were folded in a pile on the counter to my right. I rushed over and searched through them for my hard drive. I sighed as I found it, and slid it into my pocket.
I looked into the mirror above the counter and winced. There was a deep cut above my upper lip. And there was a thin cut on my forehead. My head was pounding, and my body ached. My E/C eyes had bags under them and were tired. My H/C was messy so I ran my fingers through it and attempted to fix it slightly. When I was satisfied enough I turned around and picked the bright blue jacket off the chair and slid it onto my shoulders.
I walked for the door and gently slid it open. There was what looked like a small living room outside the room. It was all white, grey, and black, very modern. There were windows all along the walls. It looked out on a lake and a large lawn. A man was sitting in one of the chairs reading the newspaper with a coffee cup in his hand. He looked at me from over the top of his paper.
"You're up." he said.
My eyes squinted a little as I looked at him, his voice was familiar.
"Cap...?" I said.
He smiled a little, "Yeah, kid, it's me."
"Where am I?"
"The Avengers base. Upstate New York."
"Why?"
"You were badly injured. You have a pretty bad concussion. And you were extremely dehydrated. We brought you here instead of a regular hospital, because after how you helped us you deserved immediate care. And I wanted to talk to you."
"About?"
"Tony Stark has his own little protege. About your age. Spider-Boy or Bug-Boy or Spider... something?"
"Spider-Man." I helped.
He snapped his fingers. "That's it! Anyway, he's been training him, with the idea that he'll eventually become a full Avenger. He's taken the kid under his wing. He's become somewhat of a father figure to the boy. So I brought you here to ask you, if you wanted to come under my wing, and I'll train you to become an Avenger eventually. So, what do you say?" he said hopefully.
"Um, all due respect, but, uh...no." I said, awkwardly.
His face fell.
"Not that I don't like you or anything. But, uh... I'm not really special. I mean I can code, and hack, and I can make robots, and make a lot of other stuff. And I can fight a little. But I'm not special. I can't shoot webs or climb walls. I can't punch through a wall or fly. I can't read minds or have a magic hammer. I'm just...normal. Besides, even if I wasn't normal, I can't really be here. There's some people I don't wanna run into here so can I leave...like now?"
Cap was at a loss for words.
"Well, uh, Tony's on his way here now. To come see who I've been talking about so much. Could you at least talk to him first?"
"Tony's on his way here!?"
Cap nodded.
"No. No I can't. I've gotta go now. I can't run into him." I said frantically.
"Why? Do you know him?" Cap said as I rushed for the door.
As soon as I reached for the door handle it swung open.
And low and behold:
Tony Stark was standing there.
He looked at me closely as his mouth opened at loss of words.
"Y/N...?" he whispered.
"I'm confused..." Cap said standing up and starting to walk towards us. Tony and I paid him no attention.
"Hey, dad."
There was a moment of silence before Cap spoke.
"What?"
My dad was staring at me mouth still slightly ajar and at a loss for words.
"Oh. Hold on." I held up a finger as I slipped Cap's phone right out of his pocket. I really don't think he noticed, he was too busy staring at Tony.
I snapped a picture of my dad's face.
"I needed a picture of the one time Tony Stark has nothing to say." I said.
Cap chuckled a little.
"H-how?" Dad said.
"How what?"
"Well you're not leaving now..." Cap said to me.
"We'll talk later, Baby America." I said to him.
He was about to protest, but just sat down on the couch. My dad sat down next to him. I sat across from them.
"Why were you in Sokovia?"
"I've been city jumping ever since I snuck away from you in Chicago."
"Where have you been?"
"Well after Chicago, I hopped a train to Boston. After that I went to New York, Brooklyn. Then it was LA. Then I branched out further, London. Then Berlin. Then Paris. Venice. Budapest. Florence. Beijing. Shanghai. Tokyo. Delhi. Cairo. Lagos. Cape Town. Sydney. Melbourne. Barcelona. Rome, and then Sokovia, Novi Grad."
"How did you get to all these places...?" Tony said.
"Oh, you know, the usual, cars, buses, trains, boats, planes..."
"So that's where he gets his sass..." Cap said.
"I hacked my way to them. Or conned my way into a free ride."
"He's sneaky like you too..." Cap mumbled.
"Cap said you were gonna leave? You didn't want to see me at all?"
"You wanted me to see you? Dad, you knocked my mom up, left her, reached out only to offer money and ask for pictures of me, and a few l
years later she got shot protecting me, because she couldn't afford to live in a better neighbourhood, because of me."
"She was shot? Is she okay?" he said.
Cap face palmed.
"I've been city jumping for four years. What do you think, dad?"
He looked down at his hands.
"I-I'm so sorry..."
"Uh-huh."
"I know I used to be an asshole. Well, I still am, but I used to be worse. And I know I used to have a lot of sex. And I know I had a lot of one night stands. But I'm not like that anymore. I'm in a steady relationship. I've changed."
"Uh-huh."
"He has, Y/N. If you won't believe him, believe me."
"So what if he has? You want me to just forgive you for everything and welcome you as my father and live happily ever after?"
"No one is saying that, Y/N..." Cap said.
"I know I've been awful, Y/N. But please, just let me redeem myself. Stay here, with me. And let me prove to you that I'm different. Let me be your father."
"I-I don't know..."
"You'd have all of the resources you need for your projects and such. You'd have access to all the materials you could possibly dream of...?"
"I-I don't know...I-" I sighed, I looked to Cap, begging for help.
"Just...stay here for a week. Go to school. Spend time around the base, in the city. Meet some people. And at the end of the week we'll let you decide if you wanna stay longer, or if you want to go back to the streets. Deal?" Cap said.
I met Cap's eyes. For once my heart didn't melt. I felt...safe. I trusted him.
I looked to me dad. "Deal."
