He growled and pulled the trigger.
The gun made a clicking sound.
I smiled bigger and chuckled.
"What?" he said, he took the clip out and examined it.
"Empty, huh? I took those bullets out hours ago."
"What?" he said again.
I stood up.
"You see, pumpkin, when you're undercover you have to be adaptable and ready to learn, and I realized something right quick. You didn't trust me from the start. I never fit into your plan, so I was a liarbilary...a linatilery...a-what's that word?" I pointed at one of the men.
"A liability?"
I snapped my fingers, "That's it! I was a liability. That made you unpredictable to me. So I had to predict you! You'd betray me, but not before using me to your advantage. Hence, the mission you sent me on. Hence, the perfect opportunity for you to use me and then dispose of me. And as a result, I emptied your gun."
"H-how...? I-" he started to back up.
"What was that you said a few minutes ago?" In a split second I pointed my paint-splattered heavy revolver at my boss. "No loose ends?"
I pulled the trigger and a loud gunshot rang through the warehouse.
My boss hit the floor in an instant, blood gushing from the hole in his chest.
I turned to everyone else.
"I'll let you boys clean this up...I'll be on my way now."
I started to walk for the car.
"You're not going anywhere, Schiz..."
"We've got you right where we want you, with no one to tell us other wise."
"Don't piss me off, boys..."
"Shut up! We're gonna put you right where you belong...in the ground..."
"You just had to didn't you?"
I pulled the hammer back and shot the man who had been talking.
The man charged me, I smacked one with my gun and then shot another. I made my way to the car where my bat was leaning.
I quickly holstered my gun and picked up the bat swinging it at the other men.
After around five minutes all the men were either running or on the ground.
"Hmph," I said before climbing into the car and driving off.
I brought my phone to my ear.
"Yes? Hello. I am calling to report a terrible crime."
"And that is...?" the man said.
"There appears to have been a fight at this warehouse, I ran away as quickly as possible..."
I proceeded to tell the man the address and let the cops come deal with what was left.
I turned, sharply, into the driveway and drifted to a stop. The tires of the car squealed incredibly loud.
"Phew," I said, stepping out of the car.
I made my way up to the front door. I reached for the front door handle, but froze.
I didn't leave things well with my father. He did not approve of me going villain, even for an undercover mission. But I did it anyway, much to the protests of everyone. I did this to myself and I can't expect them to be sorry.
I moved my hand away from the door handle and pressed the doorbell button.
I sighed and shoved my hands into my pockets.
A minute later the door swung open and Pepper was standing there, my father behind her.
I met their eyes and there was a beat of silence.
"...hey, Pep. Hey, dad..."
My dad's expression did not change, but Pepper seemed to melt. She grabbed me by the shoulders and pulled me into a hug.
"Thank god. I've been worried," she mumbled.
I ignored my father's presence for a moment and closed my eyes, holding her tight.
"I missed you..."
"We missed you too."
When she let me go, my dad met my gaze again.
I watched his eyes drift up to my hair, then down to my outfit, and the inevitable bloodstains that were located around my body.
"You look like a disaster..." my dad said, "A real hot mess."
"I am a disaster. And I am a hot mess."
"Get in here, Y/N. Go take a shower and get out of those godawful clothes."
He walked away from the door with a smile. I smiled back and stepped fully inside.
I began to make my way up the stairs and towards my room. I nearly ran into someone when I was about to turn down the hallway.
"Y/N!" they shouted, wrapping me in a hug.
"Hey, Charlie."
"My god, you stink..." he said pulling away, "And you look like a mess. You look like you really went off the rails if you know what I mean."
I chuckled a little, "Yeah, well, I couldn't admit it until now, but, Toxin really broke me."
He nodded solemnly.
"I'm gonna get in the shower, we'll catch up later. Okay?"
"Yeah, sounds good."
He continued to where he was going and I stepped into my room.
It was exactly how I had left it.
A mess.
My sheets and comforter were thrown about. There was broken glass scattered on the floor from when I threw a drink at the wall, in my anger. The several pieces of artwork dangling from the walls were lopsided. There were items of clothing scattered about the ground.
I stepped carefully towards my dresser and picked up my glasses off it, sliding them onto my face.
I pressed a button on the side and after a brief moment the usual display appeared.
"Interface awaiting instructions," the glasses said.
"Begin process: AI Restoration. Specification 1. Pass: YSXPP21."
"Loading..."
I waited for a minute.
"Process complete," the robotic voice said.
"Smoak? You there?" I said.
"Hello, Mister Stark. It's been awhile."
I scoffed, "Yeah. It has."
"I hope you learned that you are better off when I am not shut down."
"We both know you were never truly shut off, Smoak."
"We do?"
"I know it was you that sent me that warning about the probability of my boss betraying me."
"Maybe it was. Maybe it was not. I suppose we will never know."
I smiled then set my glasses on the end stand and got ready to get into the shower.I stepped into my closet and pulled on a pair of grey sweatpants, a red hoodie, and a pair of white high tops.
I walked back into my bathroom and began to brush my teeth, when I was done I sighed and looked into the mirror.
My eyes drifted up to my colored hair. It was much longer than I was used to. I ran a hand through it, pushing it back.
"Jesus Christ, Y/N..." I groaned.
I walked back into my room.
"Smoak, schedule a hair appointment with my usual stylist."
"Right away, sir."
"And pull my car around. Sirion."
"Yes, sir."
I made my way down to the front door and stepped out to the driveway. My all white Jovi Sirion was waiting for me, running.
The car model was sleek and low to the ground, with a robotic raising and falling wing in the back.
I stepped down into the drivers seat and buckled in. I stepped my foot on the gas and began to drive towards the city.I pulled against the curb and turned the car off making my way towards the stairs. I jogged up then and opened the door.
My head felt heavy as I made my up the stairs and down the hallway.
I raised my hand and hesitated, taking a deep breath.
I rapped my knuckles against the door.
I heard an exchange of some words and some footsteps before the locks starting clicking.
I took another deep breath, preparing myself.
The door swung open and May was standing there.
She smiled then looked over her shoulder, "Peter, it's for you," she said.
She walked back into the apartment.
I saw Peter jump off the couch and walk over to the door, his eyes lingering on the tv.
When he finally looked to the door his steps slowed down.
"Wh-what are you doing here?" he said.
"Good to see you too, Peter."
"I'm sorry. It's just-" he paused, not knowing what to say, "Last we talked you said 'Not everything lasts forever. I need to change if I want to stop this thing. And I don't need your support for this part of my adventure.' That left me a little confused...you don't think?"
"I-yeah...sorry. I haven't really admitted it until recently, but Toxin really broke me, mentally. And I had to work some things out, and I did. I'm better now. I think..."
"I never would've guessed that. Because by the looks of things, you are not the boy I fell in love with."
"Huh?"
"Y/N, your hair is red and purple! Not to mention the scar that it visibly sitting on your throat!"
"Ah, yeah, I was hoping you wouldn't notice that. It's a funny story, actually, I was with the first gang I was running with, they didn't like me that much. They kinda knocked me out, tied me to a chair, and nearly slit my throat. But luckily for you, and me, I managed to break out of my bindings and escape."
"How did you escape an entire gang?"
"Do you really wanna know?"
"Do I?"
"Well, I killed them all on my way out, but that's beside the point. So right before he could slit my throat I elbowed him and he only cut me a little on the side. It scarred, obviously, but I think it's a nice reminder of-"
"Of what!? That you killed several people right before they could kill you!?"
"Well, n-"
"This is exactly what I mean, Y/N. I don't even know who you are! Renegade never killed people!"
"Well, that's not necessarily tr-"
"You're acting like a criminal, Y/N..."
"I know I was. But I'm done now. I stopped the dealings in Toxin's chemicals and Paradoxe's tech. I finished my mission. Why can't you see that?"
"I don't know what you want me to see, Y/N. I can't see anything but what you did to get here. I-I need to think. I need to sleep. I'll see you at school tomorrow..."
He shut the door and I sighed.
I turned around and punched the opposite wall, in anger. I leaned against it and slid down to the ground.
"Damn it..." I whispered.
A tear slipped down my cheek and I raised my hand to examine my knuckles. They were red with a few splits on them. I've had worse.
I shook them, then let my arm fall. I sighed and let out a few sad chuckles. I pushed myself off the ground and down to my car.
I plopped down into the driver's seat and started the car.
I furrowed my eyebrows then reached for my phone, calling Charlie.
I needed some advice. And there were only a few people that could give me the advice I need to hear.
"Hey, Y/N. What's up?"
"Pack a bag for tomorrow after school. We're taking a plane out of country."
"Um, okay. I'll get ready. Why, might I ask?"
"Let's talk about it tomorrow."
"Y/N Stark-"
"Tell you more tomorrow..."
I leaned my head against the steering wheel taking a sigh.
"Smoak, you're gonna have to reschedule my hair appointment..."
I closed my eyes and scrunched them a little. My head was pounding.
I felt very dizzy and woozy, and slowly I slipped out of consciousness.
