chapter fifty-seven.
the unblairable lightness of being

Up and at them, Upper East Siders. It's time to awake from our slumber and learn the hard truth: that some nightmares don't end once we open our eyes.

REMAINING VEXED AT her little sister felt wrong of her, Victoria didn't know how she could remain stubborn after what Nate told her about what occurred the night of Eleanor Waldorf's fashion show that announced her new line for the season. Jenny was searching for a friend, a friend which she found in the Archibald that stared her down as if she was his own little sister he needed to protect. Nate possessed the same thoughts as Dan and Victoria in looking out for the young blonde constantly. He was integrating into the Humphrey family, into their morals. Nate believed he should've thought about telling Victoria about the events that occurred that night, he didn't know why he had promised to bite his tongue and not say a thing. Victoria, too, did think the same thing. It was her little sister no matter what was to happen, she was always to look out for her when in trouble.

That's what Victoria kept telling herself. Jenny might've been a bitch, but she was still her little sister and her family, there was no way she could turn her back on the blonde when trouble came knocking on her door. When her father invited her for brunch, she was hesitant, it had been a brief moment since she had stepped foot in the van der Woodsen's apartment. Well, it was all about to chance. Victoria had been waiting to taste her father's waffles, and she had been missing the warmth that came with her family, even with the absences that surrounded them.

Victoria stepped out of the elevator, her grip fastened upon the handles of the pram to push her daughter into her grandparents' home. Emery had been staring up at her mother, her ocean eyes focused on the woman biting on her bottom lip as nerves had crept up on her for reasons unknowing. Maybe it was because she still felt an ounce of different intentions that her sister had for spending the day with Nate for his birthday. A part of her mind was warning her that what happened a couple years ago had the possibility of reoccurring.

When the elevator had chimed, Eric had taken a peek, away from the food covering the countertop to see who had graced his family with their presence. The short boy's eyes lit up, a smile curving upon his thinned lips before he approached with a bounce in his step. "T!" He cheered.

"Hey, Eric." Victoria greeted with her arms opening wide for a warm embrace from her stepbrother.

Eric knew why Victoria was keeping her distance, he also understood why. He just wished that the girl wouldn't have let her little sister get underneath her skin like that. It was doing no good for the family or for themselves. His interest on Victoria shifted to the baby in the pram, the little girl's legs kicking out of excitement of being surrounded by people. Oh, Emery was a friendly baby, always eager to see what was happening around her. "Hey, Emmy!" Eric waved before reaching into the pram, his eagerness was to hold her and to integrate her into conversation even as all she was capable of doing is babbling.
