the handmaiden's tale

Long ago, when European royals grew bored with palace balls they took a page from the peons, and added some pageantry. Couture and canapés are just another Saturday night. Until you add a mask. But preparing or a balls an event in itself. Which is why queens invented handmaidens.

IF THERE WAS ever a wonder on how pretentious the Upper East Side could be, a masquerade ball in approach was about to set an expectation of what kind of events were part of the elite. There was no doubt going to be more social events which were to be further pretentious and it was always in Victoria's mind to avoid them all. She felt as though she would be capable of sticking out like a sore thumb if she attended. But what was worse than that was having to get dressed in an attire she had never been so comfortable with wearing and the thought of that crossing her mind admittedly made her stomach churn. All she had heard about for a week was the masquerade ball, and Serena had been one to ramble about it in one ear of Victoria and in the other was Jenny.

Victoria made the choice to stay away from all of those falling into preparation for the night of hiding behind masks, so the brunette was flicking through the collection of DVDs to pick a movie to eat through the takeaway she planned to order when the night had approached. The concentration of flicking through movies that either starred Audrey Hepburn, Tom Hanks and many more had been interrupted with the rummage in which the petit blonde had made in boxes she had thrown onto the countertop of the kitchen where the brunette rested.

Jenny had been swarmed with committing errands for Blair Waldorf in preparation of the masquerade ball. There had been a lot of things for her to collect from dresses, shows, masks and jewellery which led to a load of boxes that did tower within her hold. Victoria wasn't so pleased with the way the Waldorf was using her little sister as an errand girl, and though she was against it she did hope for her Jenny that there was a reward to come out of lugging boxes around New York City.

The blonde Humphrey had been waiting for the masquerade ball all throughout the week, the fashion particularly was beautiful and she refused to miss out especially after resting her sights upon the dresses. All of her rambles were of topic of the masquerade and Victoria had weakly listened as her father managed to catch every word his daughter told whilst not having an interest.

As for Dan, he was only becoming aware of the evening ahead. "A ball?" He queried.

"Haven't you heard?" Rufus questioned his eldest child who waltzed further into the loft to where his siblings and father were hovering. "Your sister's Cinderella."
