chapter twelve.
school lies

On the Upper East Side it's easy to think that the world is exactly as it appears. Refined, elegant, imposing. But sometimes, all it takes is a little key to open the door to the wild side.

"HEY, IT'S ME. It's, uh, Vic." Her voice was timid, filled with anxiety as she made a phone call that she had least expected to make but since her parents officially announced their divorce and that it'd be for the better for them to divide there was one person she knew she needed to talk to about it. . .Carter Baizen. She recalled the day when she wished to not rekindle what they once had but he became a friend to her, a friend who allowed for her to sleep on his couch when she hated the idea of going home. Victoria Humphrey had her phone pressed to her ear only greeted to the voicemail box of the Baizen and her wishes that he had answered with his cliche greeting hi, beautiful. Why did she want that? Why? "I thought I'd call." Victoria continued as her pace within her room had begun, the floorboards creaking beneath her feet. "I wanted to tell you that, uh, my parents are officially divorcing. It finally happened. I-I just. . .I just thought that you should know. We haven't spoken since that night. I told you that I didn't want us getting back together but--."

Carter Baizen was the person that she needed.

Victoria was prepared to confess that feeling that pitted in her stomach, the ache of just wanting to be in his arms as she goes through a difficult time. Of course it was terrible that she wanted Carter for her comfort, to use him for her ease and to allow the stiffness that ran through her body to fade the moment she was wrapped within his grasp. But she couldn't want that. She shouldn't want that.

Maybe it was a sign from above when Dan had cut her off, entering into her room without a knock and Vanessa Abrams following right behind him with a camera in her grasp, seemingly capturing a moment the Victoria doubted needed to be caught on film. The curly haired teen owned this eagerness and excitement that caused her eyes to light and for her to bounce on her toes as if she was waiting for something to happen.

She didn't know whether to be concerned or at ease with approach of her twin and her best friend. "What's going on?" Victoria quizzed as she had slid her phone into the pocket of the khaki playsuit she wore.

Dan's eyes narrowed on the teen, noticing how hasty she was to hide her phone away. "What were you doing?"

Victoria shrugged innocently. "Checking voicemail." She fibbed.

It was an annoyance for Victoria whenever she lied to Dan, he could see straight through her and he would question her later, in private. "Uh, okay. H-How do you feel about us heading down to school?" He wondered.
