YOUR POV

"I'll be back in a sec babe!" I yelled out to my wife as I grabbed the bag of trash by the front door.

"Where are you going?" Nat asked, popping out tightening her bath robe.

"I'm taking out trash... at night." I wiggled my eyebrows, hoping she would get my SpongeBob reference.

Nat just shook her head, trying to stifle her giggles by biting her bottom lip. I grabbed the trash bag and unlocked the front door, stepping out into the chilly night air as I walked towards the giant blue dumpster.

The black lid creaked open and I quickly tossed the trash bag in the smelly container, shutting it and turning on my heel to walk back to the house. I stopped dead in my tracks when I head a bunch of cardboard boxes collapse from behind me.

Peering over my shoulder I saw a little girl, looking no older than six come tumbling out of one of the soggy boxes.

"Hello," I greeted softly, "Are you alright?"

The little girl nodded, pushing her greasy raven hair out of her face, showing the dirt smudges littering her face.

"What's your name?" I asked taking a small step closer.

"Mommy said I'm not suppose to talk to strangers." She mumbled.

"And where's your mom at?"

The girl shrugged her shoulders, "My names Hayley."

"Hayley, that's a pretty name. I'm y/n."

"Do you have any food?"

I hummed, "I do. It's back at my house if you want to come get some and clean your face off."

Hayley nodded her head, "I'd like that."

"You can even meet my wife. She's a superhero but shh." I pressed my finger to my lips, "It's a secret."

Hayley giggles, smiling widely before skipping over to me and grabbing my hand.

[...]

"Well who's this?" Nat asked smiling at Hayley and then giving me a sad look.

"I'm Hayley." The six year old introduced herself.

"What a pretty name. Do you want something to eat?" Nat bent down and asked the little girl.

Hayley nodded cutely and Nat went into the kitchen to go and fix her something to eat while I went into our bedroom, rummaging around in the drawer we kept spare clothes for Clint's kids when they stayed. Once I grabbed an comfortable outfit for Hayley, I walked downstairs to see Nat and Hayley talking away while eating peanut butter sandwiches.

"How's the food?"

"Very good!" Hayley mumbled around a mouth full of bread, some crumbs spilling onto her plate.

"Good because this one burns water." I snorted, grabbing a water bottle from the fridge.

"I do not!" Nat defended, "it's called letting it boil."

"Yeah, okay." I laughed taking a sip.

[...]

"Thank you." Hayley randomly said as I washed the dirt out of her hair.

"You don't need to thank me."

"Most people aren't very nice to me." She mumbled, pushing around the rubber ducky in the the water.

"People are assholes." I shook my head with a scoff and gathered water in the cup to rinse her hair.

"My momma fell in love with one. Or at least that's what she called my dad. I don't know where they are now."

I didn't say anything for a moment, hearing my heart beat and break in my eardrums as I finished giving her a bath.

"You can stay with Tasha and I for awhile, only if you'd like." I told her as I started combing her hair when she was dried off and dressed.

"I'd like that. You guys are nice." A giant yawn came barreling out of her throat.

[...]

"What are you thinking?" I asked my wife who was sitting in bed with the lamp on beside her, meeting my eyes when I shut the bedroom door.

"I'm thinking that you found her living in a cardboard box fort, who knows how long she's had food or a shower for." Nat sighed sadly, "I'm think we see how this goes and then maybe... adoption."

"Are you serious?" My mouth opened and closed in shock.

"Yeah," The ginger nodded, "I mean we always talked about starting our own family. Maybe this is it."

A shit eating grin broke out on my face as I ran over and tackled my wife on the bed, placing kisses all over her face.

"This is our little miracle."
