NATASHAS POV

It's been a few months and I've managed to track, hunt and eliminate the distorted voice calling me on my phone. No more threats. Just peace and quiet. Turns out it was a woman I was in the red room with trained to hunt and kill me. She should have tried harder.

Bringing the warm cider up to my lips I felt the hot liquid burn down my throat and warming my stomach. The air was cold due to it being fall now, different colored leaves of all shapes and sizes falling onto the sidewalks. Brushing past a few people I made my way down the familiar pathway to y/ns cozy little apartment, hoping she hadn't moved since the last time I'd seen her. My heart broke at the memory. The last time I spoke to her we weren't even speaking. It was a screaming match all because I couldn't tell her there was a bounty on her head, people using her to get to me.

One of the many things the red room had embedded in my mind was that love was for children, nothing but a game full of distractions. Even if her and I weren't together she could still be in danger.

Stepping inside the lobby I was greeted by a blast of heat as I took the last sip of my drink before throwing it in the bin.

"If you're looking for y/n she's at the diner today." The familiar woman at the lobby desk informed me over her black glasses.

With a curt nod and a quick thank you I turned on my heel and went back into the frigid cold. The diner wasn't too far away from the apartment complex so I made my way there pretty quickly, the bell by the door ringing as soon as I stepped in. One of the workers greeted me and I gave a polite nod, choosing the booth in the far corner. My heart fluttered when I saw, in tiny engraving, y/n and my name with a little heart next to it. We really were going to be forever.

Sighing to myself my eyes danced around the diner trying to spot the girl I was hoping to win back. There, a few booths ahead of me she was laughing with one of the regular elderly couples that came in, she was sporting the usual diner clothing and her hair was in a neat bun. She leaned over and gathered the dishes and my heart leapt out of my chest. The silver necklace I had bought her for our one year anniversary fell out of her shirt and glistened in the soft sunlight streaming in. She still has it. Better yet, she still wears it!

Once y/n was done taking care of the plates and silverware, I saw one of her friends nod over in my direction as she whispered in y/ns ear. Y/n froze and glanced over my way. I offered a small smile in hopes it could show how sorry I really was. It must have worked because y/n came strutting over with a blank look on her face and a notepad out ready to take my order.

"Natasha." Y/n greeted without any emotion.

"Hey, y/n." I gulped as I felt nervous all of a sudden, "You look beautiful."

"And that gives me importance?" She spat.

My mouth opened and closed like a fish, becoming flustered under her stare, "What? No! It's just- I-..." I sighed, "Can we talk?"

"You have to order something." The waitress said looking away from me and down to the small notepad.

"I'll take my usual. Y/n-"

"-It'll be ready in 15 minutes." She scribbled down words on the notepad before turning on her heel.

"Y/n!" I called desperately.

"My break starts in 15 minutes. We can talk then."

[...]

The time passed slowly as I waited on my order even though I wasn't hungry at all. I just wanted to talk to y/n and convince her that I was sorry and explain things I couldn't in the moment.

Soon enough my girl came walking over with a steaming plate full of my usual order of eggs, toast and hash browns.

"Thank you." I smiled once she set the plate in front of me and sat down across from me.

"You have ten minutes to explain why you're back and showing up at my job."

I nodded, "I'm sorry for how things ended between us a few months back. I didn't want to end things with you-"

"It sure seemed like you did. You were awfully eager to get out of there." Y/n scoffed.

"Babe- y/n," I corrected, "I love you! Leaving wasn't my choice."

"See that's what I don't get," she crossed her arms over her chest, "If you love me as much as you say you do, then how do you wake up one day and just not give a shit anymore?!"

"There was a bounty on your head and I was being threatened. If I didn't leave you... you would have, they would have.." I whispered quietly, unable to get the rest of the words out of my mouth, "I thought that if I broke your heart you wouldn't want anything to do with me and you could live a normal life. I couldn't stay away after I killed them."

"Nat..." y/n croaked, reaching over to place her hand on top of mine, "I wish there was some way you could have told me. Now I feel like an ass for hating you so long after."

"You have every reason to hate me. I hurt you and that was something I promised not to do." Gently I caressed the back of her hand with the pad of my thumb.

"Do you think... maybe we could start over again?" Y/n smiled sheepishly.

I grinned, "I'd like that very much."

"Well in that case, Hi, I'm y/n. It's nice to meet you."

I giggled and shook her hand, "It's nice to meet you too. I'm Natasha. So, do you come here often?"

Y/n and I laughed at my cheesy pick up line, both of us settling back into how things were before both of us split abruptly and sharing the food I ordered before it got cold.
