it was all kind of a blur to nikki, she remembered sitting crouched down in the hot dirt behind the others, while she shielded lola from seeing sophia's walking corpse. sophia. she was in the barn this whole time, and they had no idea. several weeks of searching, and she was fifty feet away the entire time.everyone had assumed that the shootout was over, but seeing sophia, it brought a shock they never expected. especially for carl and lola, nikki knew how much the little girl meant to them. and so to see her, the mother knew how much this was gonna change them, more than they already have.
she remembered her daughter sobbing into her chest because of sophia, and feeling her fragile body twitch in surprise at the loud gunshot. the gunshot ended with an echo, leaving them all there, speechless. not a sound was heard from anyone, no one but carol, who's sobs echoed through the winds. when nikki mustered enough courage to look up, she watched as rick lowered his gun, his eyes glued to the corpse beneath him.
nikki's eyes never left sophia's body, she stared, and she stared, remembering what sophia's giggle sounded like, how she always greeted her good morning and goodnight, always calling her 'mrs. walsh' even when nikki insisted she didn't have to. she was a sweet girl, who'd never done a thing wrong in her life.
and now she's dead.
it gave nikki a sense of clarity in that moment, as she realized that it didn't matter how many sins you've committed, or how much you pray, you can still turn into an undead monster who only want to eat anything that bleeds.
praying won't save us, we'll have to save ourselves.
andrea was crouched down, staring at sophia's body who'd she had just briefly covered with a blanket. dale was checking the bodies, and lori and carl sat on the dirt side by side with nikki and lola. karleen had walked off several minutes ago, desperate to be anywhere else but in the presence of that little girl's lifeless body.
