Maxine's POV
I opened the door to the English classroom and I looked around for any empty seats. There was only one available...Of course it was next to Cheryl.
I sighed and slowly made my way towards the desk and was about to pull my chair out when Cheryl stopped me.
"And what do you think you're doing?"
"Sitting down at my desk?"
"That desk isn't yours. Go find another."
"There is no other desks, Cheryl. If there were, I wouldn't choose to sit here, next to you." I said as I removed my backpack and dropped it next to the desk. I know I came off as mean, but Cheryl was really starting to piss me off.
Cheryl huffed but didn't say another word as I sat down and as I reached into my backpack, and who I assume is the teacher walked through the door.
"Good morning class. How we all doing?"
I quickly sat up, my eyes locked onto the teacher. He looked at me, a look of surprise on his face.
"Maxine." He said softly.
"Mr Perry." I nodded my head at him, not wanting to gain too much attention on us.
He gave me a half smile before he started with the class. As the class slowly progressed, I grew bored. I already learned about Romeo and Juliet, the most stupidest love story to ever exist. In my opinion anyway, I wasn't one for love....Not anymore.
"I want you to work in pairs. Read the book together and try and adapt it to modern times. See what the differences would be, what could maybe stay the same."
A few students went to stand up but Mr Perry laughed. "Hold on now, I'll be choosing your partner. I want people who don't usually work together, to work together. So first up, Ethel, you're with James." Mr Perry continued to read out names. "Donte, with Finn...And Cheryl, you're with...Maxine."
"Seriously?!" Cheryl said clearly annoyed. "Why must you pair me up with her?"
"Maxine Taylor is one of the smartest and kindest people I know." Mr Perry said slamming his hands on his desk. "For godsake Cheryl, learn to have some respect. I've noticed you glaring at her every few seconds. What is your problem?"
"I believe it is you, that has the problem. How dare you speak to me in such a tone."
I looked at Mr Perry and shook my head, my eyes pleading with him to tone it down, he'd draw too much attention and people would question why he's acting like this.
"Cheryl, I apologise." Mr Perry sighed as he subtly nodded his head at me, understanding he needed to tone it down. "It's just been one of those mornings and I expected more from you, especially considering she's new, I thought you might have helped."
"I don't do helping, sir."
Mr Perry shook his head as he turned his back to the class and began to write our task on the board as he mumbled something under his breath...Something about Toni..
Cheryl quickly grabbed her bag and stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her. Mr Perry's head dropped, he knew he shouldn't have said whatever it is he did say. I grabbed my backpack and went after Cheryl, sure she's been mean to me so far but I didn't like to see anyone upset and for her to storm out of the classroom, she must be pretty upset.
She went straight into the bathroom and threw her bag at the wall, which I was surprised at considering it looked expensive.
She was facing away from me and my heart hurt for her as I heard her crying. It wasn't a normal sad cry, she was heartbroken. Her hands were in her hair, gripping it tightly as she fell to her knees.
I was quickly beside her, my arms around her. "Get your vile, filthy hands off my body you freak." She shouted as she pushed me away from her and into the bathroom stall door.
"I was just making sure you were okay."
"Does it look like I'm okay?" She glared at me.
"Alright, I'm sorry." I readjusted myself, leaning more comfortably against the stall. "I know you don't like me and I'm okay with that."
"So why are you still here?" She asked as she also changed her position so she was leaning against the wall, facing me.
"Because I don't, not like you. I don't like you either...If that makes sense.."
Cheryl let out a small laugh as leaned her head against the wall. "Just a little."
"I just care, that's all. I care about everyone...Within reason. I don't care what you look like, what your story is, sexual orientation or whatever. If you're a nice person then, I'm gonna care."
"I'm not a nice person." Cheryl mumbled.
"You are. You've just been through some shit and that's okay. So have I." I moved closer to her, I went to place my hand on her leg but changed my mind, we were talking normally and I didn't want to ruin that by having her get mad at me. "I've been in a similar situation to you...It gets better...Even only a little."
Cheryl gave me a small smile and stood up slowly. "This doesn't change anything though. Stay out of my way."
"I understand." I nodded my head as she walked past me and grabbed her bag. I remained on the floor, feeling a small amount of pain forming in my stomach.
Not now. Please, not now.
Cheryl was about to walk out of the door but she turned around. "Art thou coming or are you staying there?" She asked as she held her hand out for me.
I grabbed her hand and stood up, but as I did, the pain in my stomach grew stronger and I fell back to my knees, almost pulling Cheryl with me.
"Are you okay?" Cheryl asked quickly as she knelt beside me, a look of concern on her face.
The feeling was growing and growing, moving into my head, I couldn't control it any longer. I was going to lose control. I tilted my head to the side as my breathing became faster and faster.
"Maxine?"
The bathroom door flew open and Mr Perry was stood there. "Cheryl get out. I'll deal with it, get the nurse." He ordered.
Cheryl stood up quickly and left the room. I let out a small growl as Mr Perry knelt beside me.
"I can't." I barely managed to get out.
"You have to." He nodded his head. "It's okay."
I closed my eyes and the darkness soon surrounded me. It was a bad idea coming here....The thing I feared most was going to happen again, as much as I wanted to control it, I couldn't. It was unavoidable.
