Maxine's POV
Penelope pulled away from the hug and I gently wiped her cheeks with my thumb, my thumb lingered there for few moments before I opened my hand and gently cupped her face, my heart melting as her eyes closed and she leaned into my touch.
A small smile formed on her face before she opened her eyes once more. She moved my hand and held it gently as she led me towards the sofa and sat down.
"It's been so long, Maxine. I never thought I'd see you again."
"I never thought I'd see you again either..I'm so sorry for just leaving. It's just...It was a hard time and I couldn't put you in any danger."
"I understand." Penelope replied sadly. "I thought about you everyday, I missed you every day. I prayed and I prayed you would come back."
I moved away from the sofa and knelt down, picking up the picture frame and shards of glass that had been forgotten for a moment.
I looked down at the picture and saw a picture of a young man. About the same age that I looked.
"Well, it seems like you got everything you wanted." I said, my tone coming our rather bitter as I placed the broken frame on the coffee table.
"I got what I wanted but not what I needed. What I needed was you...But you didn't want nor need me."
"I did." I said shocked and slightly hurt. I knelt down on the floor and took her hands in mine. "You were all I wanted and all I needed but you knew what I was, what I am. It never would've worked out."
"Is that what you do then? You come into people's lives, make them care, make them fall in love with you only to leave because you're a vampire, you do that to people knowing it would never work, leaving them hurt? Leaving them utterly broken?"
"You were different." I said trying not to cry.
"If I was so different then why did you leave me too?" Penelope leaned forward, resting her forhead on mine. "You promised you wouldn't."
"It was better if I left."
"Better for who?" She replied as she removed her hands and sat back.
"For everyone." I said standing up and moving to the sofa across from her.
"Oh really? Because everyone accepted you. Everyone that knew, accepted you. They loved you, they missed you. They needed you. I NEEDED YOU!" She began to cry harder and my heart broke. "Now I got two kids, one that's dead and another that hates me and a husband who doesn't love me." She coughed and tried to compose herself as she wiped her eyes.
"I'm sorry."
"I don't want your apologies or your sympathy. None of it matters anymore. What's done is done. You haven't changed one bit Maxine. Always apologising, always caring.."
"I can say the same for you, you haven't changed much at all."
Penelope let out a small laugh as she crossed her leg over the other. "I got old."
"No." I shook my head and leaned forward. "You didn't get old, you just aged like a fine wine."
She laughed and shook her head. "Forever the flirt."
"If you weren't married I would ask for a taste." I winked.
"Does it matter?" She flirted back.
Suddenly the door flew open and Cheryl walked into the room, huffing and puffing.
"Oh hello Mother, I didn't think you were home."
"Your Father has taken the car to Mr Andrews. Something about needing a new battery and set of tires."
"I see. Well, sorry for the tea delay my friend. It seems someone." She glared at Penelope. "Has been rearranging the kitchen again. Not to worry, I found the tea. Shall I show you to the guest bedroom?"
"Guest bedroom? She can't stay here." Penelope said quickly.
"Mother, I really don't care for your thoughts on this. I already told Mr Perry and Nurse Margarey that she would be staying here because she needs to be taken care of. Her parents died and she isn't taking care of herself. She passed out at school today because she wasn't getting the nutrients her body needs."
"I'm sorry to hear that." Penelope said looking at me with a knowing look.
"It's fine."
"So mother, you can be cruel to me all you want but you are not to be cruel to our guest, understood?"
I stared at Cheryl in shock, the way she spoke to her Mother baffled me and also angered me.
"Cheryl, have some respect for your mother." I said without thinking. "There's no need to be disrespectful."
"Excuse you. You are a guest in my house, please hush where you are not concerned." Cheryl fired back.
I stood up quickly, anger fueling my body. Even after all these years I was protective of Penelope.
"I don't know where I went wrong, raising a spiteful little bitch. Why did it have to be Jason who died? He was such a sweet young man, but you? You are nothing and you will always be nothing."
"I know. You've made that clear for the past seventeen years, Mother." Cheryl said sadly before turning around and leaving the room. Her feet pounding up the stairs as I turned around to look at Penelope.
I looked at her disappointment evident in my voice. "When I said you hadn't changed much, I was clearly wrong. That is not the woman I fell in love with."
"A lot can happen in twenty six years, Maxine." She replied bitterly.
"Yeah. No shit." I replied before going after Cheryl.
What the hell has happened here since I left?
