Maxine's POV
As the day slowly progressed, I realised the school hadn't changed much at all. The only thing new was a few new posters, pictures and a fresh lick of paint along with new teachers of course. It seems Robert and Margarey are the only ones that have stayed all these years. Hopefully the others left on their own accord.
I currently had a free period which I was thankful for. I didn't fancy another lesson where I already know everything...I know, what's the point in me even being here? Well, I may not like learning but I like helping. I'm not going to tutor anyone but it's always nice to give someone that extra help during class, plus something is always tweaked slightly in Math so it's always fun to figure out new ways to solve problems.
As I walked down the seemingly never ending hall way, I passed a trophy case and the first thing that caught my eye was a picture of the football team and the cheerleaders back in Autumn 1992.
I opened the trophy case and slowly removed the picture. I smiled as I looked at how happy we all looked...Well, except for me. I wasn't even part of the cheerleading squad but Alice Smith and Hermione Gomez insisted I joined the group picture.
It was one of my last happy memories of this place...I wonder how everyone is doing...
I carefully placed the picture back just as the bell rang for lunch. I slowly walked to the cafeteria and just before I reached it, I bumped into someone.
"Again? Really?"
"Sorry, Cheryl." I quickly apologised as I knelt down and picked her books up for a second time.
"Don't make a habit of this. I don't think I can't handle you doing this in my home aswell."
"I don't have to stay with you, I'm capable of taking care of myself."
"Nonsense Maxine. I was merely pulling your leg. You're just clumsy. Anyways, care to join me for lunch?"
"Sorry Cheryl, Maxine and I have some talking to do."
I turned around to see Veronica walking towards us, she pulled me by the arm gently and linked our arms together.
"Oh okay." I heard Cheryl say quietly and slightly disappointed as Veronica led me away.
"See you later Cheryl." I said as I looked over my shoulder earning a small wave and a smile as she composed herself. "So what's up Veronica?
"Oh, nothing Maxie. I was just saving you from that poisonous bitch."
"She's not that bad."
"Sure. She's only being nice to you because she wants something. Be careful."
I wish people wouldn't keep saying things like that, surely she's not that bad...But they've known her longer so I will be careful, I'm going to have to be extra careful now.
Veronica led me outside and as we walked across the grass, I smiled and sighed happily as the warm sun hit my skin, it felt so nice.
And I can only say that thanks to my friend who gave me a special ring that allows me to be out during the day...Otherwise I would be burning and I would be in complete agony.
"Hey guys." Veronica greeted the group as she led me over to a bench they were sat at.
"Hey babe." Archie grinned as he placed his guitar down on the table. "Hey Max."
"Hey." I said sitting down next to Betty as she slid closer to Jughead, allowing me to sit.
"Is it true that you're staying with Cheryl Blossom? The Queen Bitch?" Jughead asked.
"Yep." I said as I removed my backpack.
"Wow, good luck." Archie laughed.
I sighed and rested my head on the table, I was tired of them calling her Queen Bitch. There was just something about her that made me think she was just simply misunderstood.
It reminded me of someone. Someone I left here.
"Ow, damnit."
My head snapped up as Archie held his finger, blood slowly trickling down.
No. No. No. No.
"You okay Archiekins?" Veronica asked concerned as she gently grabbed his finger.
"Yeah. Stupid guitar string."
"What happened?" I asked trying to control the hunger I felt as I stared at his blood.
I could do this, I could. I knew I could.
"I was messing with the guitar strings and one of them snapped and caught my finger."
I let out a groan as the hunger was becoming unbearable, I needed to get out of there and fast. Without saying a word, I grabbed my backpack and ran back into the school, the smell of blood lingering. I could almost taste it.
"Maxine?" Robert shouted.
I turned around, panting slightly, a small growl coming out every few breaths.
"Oh shit." He muttered as he got closer to me. "Come on." He said as he led me into an empty classroom. He closed the door and locked it behind us before he bit his wrist and held it to my mouth, forcing me to feed. "You were about to turn full psycho vampire. The hell happened?"
"Archie's finger was bleeding." I said once I finished taking what I needed. "I don't know what's going on but that hasn't happened in a while. The last time that happened..I..."
"I know but this is what happens when you don't feed the right way and then you see human blood. It happened before because you tried stopping having human blood and now it's happening again, you can't live like this Maxine. You are a vampire, human blood is what you need to even live a somewhat normal life."
I wiped my mouth as I glared at him. "I'm never going to be able to live a normal life again." I pushed my way past him and unlocked the door, ready to carry on the rest of my day.
I needed to be more careful. I couldn't let that feeling take over me again, what happened before wasn't going to happen again.
