Maxine POV
I was the last one to enter the living room. I kept my head down, not wanting to look at Penelope. I looked up as Cheryl gently pulled my arm as she sat down on the sofa facing the fireplace.
A woman was sat in a wheelchair, watching me. A look of disbelief on her face. I smiled at her and she leaned further into her wheelchair, a smug smile on her face as she glanced towards Clifford.
"My, my. You haven't changed one bit."
"Excuse me?" I asked, startled that she was bringing up knowing me.
"Same black hair, same smile. Same well kept body. Come closer dear, let me have a look at you."
"Nana Rose, what are you talking about?" Cheryl asked confused as I swallowed hard.
"Rose, did you forget to take your pills?" Penelope asked placing her hand on Rose's knee. "You've never seen this young girl before, she's a new student at Cheryl's school. She'll be staying here a few days."
"Nonsense. That's Maxine! She's finally come home." Rose beamed. "She's finally come to save you from that horrid man."
"Oh do be quiet you old bat." Clifford said as he stirred his tea. "I'm terribly sorry Maxine, it seems my mother here hasn't taken her medication. She gets a little confused sometimes."
I was thankful that Clifford still didn't hate me enough to expose my secret to Cheryl. I didn't want her knowing yet, if at all.
"Nana Rose, would you like me to pour your tea?" Cheryl offered.
"Yes please dear. Maxine, could you please grab the plates that are on the counter in the kitchen? I seem to have forgotten to bring them in, Penelope go help her."
"It's okay." I said standing up. "I'll manage."
Before she could say another word, I made my way out of the living room and towards the kitchen.
Before I grabbed the plates, I decided to grab a glass of water, I felt like I was about to pass out. Why was she doing this? Maybe she really was confused and forgot that I had a secret and she thought it's been a few years? I don't know, I just don't want Cheryl knowing.
I turned around and almost jumped as I saw Penelope stood there, looking sad.
"Rose sent me to check on you."
"'Of course she did." I said as I placed the glass in the sink. "I'll grab the plates."
"Wait, Max." She grabbed my arm, pulling me back slightly. "I'm sorry, for earlier."
"It's not me you need to apologise to." I replied before roughly pulling my arm away from her grip and grabbing the plates that had sandwhiches on.
I entered the room, Penelope not far behind and I was instantly hit by Clifford's ice cold stare. I placed the plates on the table next to the pot of tea but I felt someone nudge me and I lost my balance.
Cheryl steadied me before I fell but the pot of tea fell on me, burning my stomach.
I hissed in pain as I stood up, looking around I saw Clifford smirking.
"Are you alright?"
"Are you okay?"
Cheryl and Penelope asked at the same time. I nodded my head as I left the room, Clifford subtly tripping me again.
I know what he was doing, he was trying piss me off but I wasn't going to let him get to me. I headed straight for the downstairs bathroom, hoping it was in the same place as before.
I opened the door and breathed a sigh of relief as it was still there. I walked inside and closed the door before removing my damp shirt.
I studied myself in the mirror, a medium sized red mark was left on my stomach, it was struggling to heal. Probably because I hadn't had much blood recently.
I pressed down on it gently, wincing as it hurt a little. I grabbed a towel and turned the cold water tap on, I placed a small amount of the towel under the water before gently dabbing the burned area.
"Maxine?" Penelope said as she knocked on the door before opening the door a little.
I turned around and removed the towel from my stomach. "I hope you don't mind." I held the towel up.
"N...Not at all." Peneloped replied, not taking her eyes off my stomach.
I smirked knowing why, she had a thing for my abs and I kept myself in good shape so my body hadn't changed at all.
"Um, here." She said handing me a button up shirt. "Maybe not your style but until Cheryl gets around to taking you home...It's the only thing we have that's close."
"Thanks." I took the shirt from her and put it on.
"Why is it not healing?" She whispered, gesturing to my stomach.
"Guess its because I haven't had enough blood." I shrugged as I slowly buttoned up the shirt.
Penelope walked in and closed the door behind her, locking it. She took a step closer and I moved backwards. My back hitting the sink, we were only in a small bathroom so there wasn't much room to move.
"Feed on me." She said as she lowered her shirt, exposing her neck.
"You know I can't." I bit my lip as I stared at her neck. I wanted to so bad but I was scared I'd lose control.
"It's okay." She encouraged.
I licked my lips and moved closer. Just as I was about to give in, I noticed a scar on her neck. A faint bite mark. Mine.
"I can't." I repeated. "At least not on your neck."
"Why?" She asked crossing her arms.
"The last time I did that...Things happened."
"Yes. We made love."
"No, I almost killed you." I looked down ashamed. "I don't want to kill you, or even almost kill you again."
"I understand." Penelope straighted her shirt out just as there was a knock on the bathroom door.
"Mother? Maxine? What's going on in there?" Cheryl asked.
Penelope unlocked the door and opened it. "Just tending to Maxine's burn, dear." Penelope answered before walking out of the room. "Oh and Cheryl...I'm sorry, not just for earlier...For the past seventeen years."
"If you think a simple sorry will make everything okay, you're wrong." She replied with an eye roll.
"I know." Penelope smiled. "But it's a start."
Penelope glanced towards me and I smiled at her, letting her know that she did well. I was proud of her, she always did find it hard to apologise...And especially with how she's treated Cheryl the past seventeen years, makes it harder but she did it.
She's working on changing, at least I hope so and for that, I'm proud of her.
