Maxine's POV
School had finally finished and so I hurried out of the school and towards the carpark, not wanting to piss Cheryl off even more than I already have today.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone to see it was ten minutes past three.
"Five minutes early, well done Maxine."
I turned to see Cheryl strutting towards me. She walked beside me and linked our arms together as she led me towards her car.
A red convertable. Of course.
"Isn't she beautiful?"
"Yeah." I said glancing up towards Cheryl. "She is."
Cheryl unlocked the car and we hopped inside. The interior was also red, I'm starting to realise that red is her colour.
"Now then my dear friend, shall we ride in silence and add some drama to our little journey, make small talk or listen to the radio?"
"Since when are we friends? You basically hated me this morning." I said giving her a look of confusion.
"That was then, if you're to be my guest then we should get along, should we not? Now, please answer my question."
"Let's listen to the radio..."
"Excellent. I was hoping you would choose that."
Cheryl turned the radio on and we greeted by Cake By The Ocean.
"This song is so stupid." I huffed as I layed back against the seat.
"I quite like it." Cheryl said as she started the car up and began to hum along. I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms, I absolutely hated this song and I was thankful for when it was over.
Before the next song could play, Cheryl turned the volume down slightly as she glanced towards me. "So how was your first day?"
"I thought we were listening to the radio." I replied as I turned the volume back up.
"I would like to also have a conversation." She replied turning the volume down once again.
"Well I don't."
"Fine, whatever." Cheryl sighed as she leaned her elbow on the door as continued the drive, silence between us as the radio carried on playing.
I did feel bad for how I've just been towards her, but I really don't want to be staying with her. It's not safe for her and whoever else she lives with.
I turned to look at Cheryl and a single tear rolled down her cheek, without thinking I gently wiped it away, causing her to jump slightly.
"I'm sorry." I apologised. "I didn't mean to make you cry."
"You didn't...I just have a lot on my mind and I thought talking to you, could...Y'know distract me?"
"Do you wanna talk about it?"
"Maybe some other time." She sniffed but gave me a small smile. "Thanks though and anyways, here we are."
I looked out of the window and my heart dropped. We were stopped outside of a gate and as I averted my gaze to look at the house, I felt nervous butterflies erupt in my stomach. I never thought I'd be here again.
"Welcome to Thistle House." Cheryl said as she drove us towards the house. "Looks like my parents are out, which is good. We can get you settled with no issues and then I can take you to your home and we can grab you some clothes."
"Thanks." I replied, not taking my eyes off the house.
The car slowly came to a stop and I slowly opened the car door.
"Hurry up will you? It's a tad chilly out here."
I grabbed my backpack and threw it over my shoulder as I exited the car and gently closed the door.
"Cheerleading practice was so intense today." Cheryl said as she led me into her home. "I need some tea, would you care for some?" She asked as she held the door open for me.
"No, thank you." I replied as I walked inside and looked around the large enterance and hall way. Nothing had changed, nothing at all.
"Okay well, I won't be long, the living room is just through there so make yourself comfortable."
As Cheryl walked down the hallway, I walked towards the living room. I looked at the walls, smiling as certain memories came flooding back. I reached the living room door and slowly pushed the door open.
A woman was stood by the fireplace, holding a picture.
There was no mistaking who she was as my heart began to beat faster.
"Hello Penelope."
The picture fell from her hand, glass smashing everywhere as she let out a small gasp and she snapped her head towards me.
"Maxine."
I walked closer to her as she remained frozen in place. She stared at me in complete shock as I stood in front of her.
Her hand reached towards my face, she gently dragged her fingers down my cheek, to my chin. Her fingers lingered there as she moved even closer, cupping my face with both her hands.
She hadn't changed much at all these past twenty six years. She still looked somewhat the same, just older and her eyes...They were once so soft and kind...Now they held saddness and pain.
"You're back." She finally spoke again.
"I'm back." I nodded my head.
Her eyes filled with tears and she moved her hands, instead wrapping her arms around my neck as I dropped my backpack, my arms going to her waist as I hugged her tightly.
"I'm sorry." I said as my own eyes filled with tears. "I'm so sorry."
