Maxine's POV
I walked inside Thistle House and was instantly greeted by Cheryl leaning against the door frame of the living room.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing?"
Cheryl walked towards me, her eyes staring deep into my soul, making me feel somewhat uncomfortable. She continued to stare at me, until she broke the eye contact as she closed her eyes and pressed her lips against mine.
She wrapped her arms around my neck and pulled away from the kiss.
"You're lying. Please don't lie to me. Did Hiram do something to you? What happened?"
I bit my lip, unsure if I should tell her or not...It wouldn't be the first time I kept something from her...Obviously. But this time it was different...And we did say no more secrets.
"Okay, I'll tell you."
She smiled at me and removed her arms. She took my hand gently and led me into the living room. Penelope was also there, her eyes focused on a photo album.
Cheryl and I sat on the other sofa as Penelope seemed too interested in the photo album to care that we were there.
"So, spill. What happened?" Cheryl asked crossing her right leg over her left.
"He had Nick tied up. He had been beating him...Then he let me have a go. I demanded to know why he tried to kill me..." I sighed and rubbed my cheek. "Penelope."
"Hmm?" She replied looking up.
"Remember those two people I killed? When I went full psycho vampire."
"Yes, they killed your parents. We were all there."
"Nick was there too. He was the little kid."
"Nicholas St Clair? But...He's my age.." Cheryl said confused.
I shook my head. "Nope. He's lied about his age. He is actually twenty seven. He's been working with Clifford since he was small. Those business trips? He was raising Nick with his aunt. They have been planning on killing me since then...But Nick started rambling about some random shit that made no sense...So it's hard to tell what's the truth and what's a lie."
"He mentioned something about us, didn't he?" Cheryl asked raising an eyebrow.
"He did." I nodded. "He said that I killed you both. Turns out it was just a trick...Playing games with me...I...I don't know...I almost killed him."
"Almost?" Penelope asked. "What do you mean almost?"
"Hiram stopped me."
"How? What did he do to you?" Cheryl asked worried.
I stood up and lifted my shirt up to reveal a bandage going around my stomach. "The only way to stop me. He stabbed me with wood. It wasn't to hurt me, just to stop me."
"How do you know it wasn't to hurt you?"
I laughed as did Penelope. She flicked through the photo album before holding it up, showing a picture of Hiram with his arms around me.
"He loves Maxine. Sure, his intimate love is only for Hermione...But he's always had a soft spot for Maxine. He would never hurt her, even when she beat him half to death. He just let her,he refused to hurt her."
"He knows I was only interested in women, but it didn't stop him from flirting, buying me things and calling me his love."
I moved to sit next to Penelope, curiosity getting the best of me. I gently took the photo album from her and began to look through the pictures. Tons of memories coming flooding back.
"Oh." I said trying not to laugh.
There was a picture of FP and I completely drunk, both of us dancing on the stripper pole at the Whyte Wyrm.
So many happy memories, wether I could remember all of them or not.
I turned the page and I looked at Penelope who was looking back at me, wearing a smile like me.
It was at the Autumn school dance. It was the first time I had dressed up in a nice suit. Penelope was in a black dress, which was unusual for her because she wore bright colours but on that night, she wore what she wanted.
I took a closer look and saw the necklace that I had given her just before we entered the main hall.
"Max."
I looked up at Penelope and saw she was holding the same necklace in her hand. I gently took her hand and smiled. I looked up at her and she handed it to me.
She turned slightly so I could put it on for her.
"I never wanted to take it off but...Clifford threatened to break it and I wasn't willing to take that risk." She said turning back round again.
"I understand. Really I do."
"I'm just gonna go."
I turned my head to look at Cheryl who was standing up, subtly wiping her face as she did so. I stood up too and followed her out of the room.
I closed the living room door behind me, to give Cheryl and I some privacy. Before she could walk up the stairs, I gently pulled her by the arm.
"I'm sorry." I apologised, knowing why she was upset. "It was never going to be easy...It's just...Those are memories your Mom and I made together and it's just nice to remember, but I am focused on you, on us, on our future." My heart dropped as my earlier thoughts returned.
"I guess I'm just a little jealous, that's all." Cheryl said wiping her eyes.
I wrapped my arms around her and kissed her. Pulling away slightly to nuzzle her nose with mine.
"You don't need to be jealous. I'm in love with you and I'm with you...Speaking of...We haven't been on a date yet."
"Pop's?"
I shook my head. "A girl like you needs something more special. Wear something nice and...Make sure it's red." I winked. "I'll see you at six."
I pecked her forhead before walking out of the house. A huge grin on my face, what I had planned, I really hoped she'd like...But I needed help and I knew just who to call.
I pulled my phone out and called the one person I knew could help.
"Hello old friend. Remember that favour? It's not exactly what you had in mind what I'm about to ask...But I think you'll like it."
As my friend agreed to help, I couldn't help but think that tonight would be a great night.
