Maxine's POV

I realised as Alice continued to hold me that there was only one option. I focused hard and then...I turned my emotions off.

Everything that kept me partly human, was no more.

I was numb.

I wasn't sad.
I wasn't angry.
I didn't feel anything, not even love.

I gently pushed Alice away and stood up. I made my way towards my old group of friends who were stood around Clifford. He was still breathing.

I grabbed him roughly by the scruff of his neck and began to choke him with one hand. I smiled at him, feeling some sort of pleasure, some sort of amusement coming from hearing him struggling to breathe.

I pressed squeezed, almost breaking his neck in two. Until I was pulled away.

Fred was pulling me away but I pushed him, hard. Shocking everyone.

"He needs to die." I went to finish the job but Alice pulled me back.

"I know. We all know, but right now Cheryl needs you. She has just lost her Mother, her ex girlfriend who was also her best friend."

"Am I supposed to care?" I asked in a bored tone. "Oh yeah, I'm a girlfriend. Right. I forgot."

Alice shook her head at me, a look of disappointment on her face. "Don't do that. You said you wouldn't do this again."

"Do what?" I asked walking past her and walking to Toni's body.

"Turn your emotions off."

"Shit changes." I shrugged before kneeling down. I was about to pick Toni up but something caught my eye.

Blood was seeping through her shirt, but not from her chest. I lifted her shirt up to see she had been shot in the stomach, not the heart.

I looked at Cheryl and she was crying as she held Penelope's lifeless body close to her chest.

I scooped Toni up and carried her bridal style, leaving Cheryl to be with her Mother for a few more minutes.

"Fred. Truck, now." I demanded.

Fred came running and unlocked the truck for me and I placed Toni inside, laying her across the backseat.

"She's not dead. Clifford didn't shoot her in the chest. Tell the others, tell Cheryl."

"Why don't you?" He asked confused.

"Because I don't want to. Because...I can't stay. Not now. It was a mistake coming back." I said as I closed the door before starting to walk away.

"Don't you dare leave me."

I turned around to see Cheryl stood in front of the enterance to the warehouse.

"I just lost my Mother and my best friend. I'm not losing you too." She said walking over. "You don't get to make me fall for you and then just decide to leave when things get hard."

"It's what I do." I shrugged.

"Not anymore. You hear me? Not any fucking more." She said pushing me hard. "It's been a while since someone gave a fucking damn about me and you were the first person to do so and I am not letting you go so easily. I'm not my Mother."

I roughly pushed Cheryl against the truck and held her by the throat. "Don't you fucking talk about her. She hasn't been dead five minutes and you're already being a bitch about her."

"Well its true." Cheryl said, unphased that I was holding her tightly. "She let you go so easily. I won't. I will fight for you to stay with all the strength in my body. I love you, Maxine. For fuck sake, I've loved you from the moment you knocked my damn books out my hands." She laughed lightly.
