Maxine's POV

With Josie and Betty's help, Cheryl and I arrived back at Thistle House. When Penelope saw us, she looked like she could cry. She hugged Cheryl and then she hugged me. She practically ordered us straight to bed like we were two kids, I didn't mind though, Cheryl needed to warm up. I would be okay.

Josie and Betty didn't stay which I was thankful for, I needed to talk to Cheryl. She tried leaving the river on her own but I wasn't gonna let that happen. I just needed to make sure she was okay because she didn't look it.

I followed Cheryl into her bedroom but I don't think she noticed as she jumped when she saw I was behind her.

"What do you want, Maxine?" She asked quietly as she began to slowly remove her wet clothes. She began to struggle with her shirt so I helped her.

After I had removed her shirt, we stayed there just staring into eachothers eyes. Countless times I had gotten lost in them, countless times all I wanted to do was kiss her. Now my chance had gone because I was with Josie.

"Thank you." She whispered, breaking the eye contact she grabbed her shirt from my hand.

I walked to her wardrobe and opened it, grabbing the first T-Shirt I saw then opening a drawer and grabbing the first pair of underwear. When I turned around, I saw Cheryl with her arms covering her breasts, shivering slightly.

"Um...Can you...?" She turned around, and glanced over her shoulder. "Can you help me please?"

I walked towards her and I moved some of her wet hair so it went across her shoulder. I gently trailed my finger down her back, feeling her soft but cold skin. I needed to stop or else I would do something I would regret...But also probably wouldn't.

I unclasped her bra and handed her the T-Shirt and underwear as she turned around. I turned around, giving her some privacy. I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder and I turned back around to see she was decent.

"Please remove your clothes before getting into my bed." She said as she moved the covers and got into her bed.

"You want me to stay?" I asked looking down. "You don't hate me?"

She shook her head and I removed my wet jeans and shoes. I also struggled with my shirt so I gave up and used some of my strength to rip it off.

"Well, I'm glad you didn't do that to mine."

I chuckled lightly as I held the two ripped pieces in my hands. I grabbed my jeans and my shirt along with her things and put them in a corner before joining Cheryl in her bed.

We both layed on our backs in silence. It was somewhat awkward due to how things have been the last couple of months.

"I never truly hated you, Maxine." Cheryl spoke breaking the silence. "I was more scared than anything."

"I would never hurt you, Cheryl. Never." I said quickly turning my head to look at her. "I know what I did was scary but I couldn't have your dad hurting Penelope. She told you everything right?"

Cheryl nodded.

"Then you know how much I loved her. How much she meant to me."

"Then why did you leave her?" Cheryl asked looking at me. "If you loved her and cared about her so much then why did you leave?"

I bit my lip and swallowed hard. "I...I killed some people and it wasn't safe for her if I stayed.. The worst thing is, I killed two people in front of their kid but those bastards...They killed my family and I just lost it."

"How can you promise not to hurt me if you lost it and killed people? What if you lose it with me? With my Mother?"

"I didn't care for those bastards. They were vampire hunters. But you.." I turned on to my side and moved closer, Cheryl did the same. "I care for you and your Mom."

"Even after what I did?"

I nodded my head slowly. "Even after what you did."

I watched as a single tear rolled down her cheek and once again, months later, I found myself wiping it away.

"I'm sorry." She apologised. "For everything y'know. For being a bitch, for disturbing your date with Josie. For telling you to leave...I'm sorry."

"Hey, it's okay. It's the past. We can move on, now that everything is in the open and you've had time to process what I am, maybe we can start fresh."

"Not everything is in the open."

"What do you mean?" I asked confused.

Cheryl bit her bottom lip as she looked away.

"Cheryl?"

"It's too late to tell you."

"It's only too late when that person is gone and I promise you, I'm not going anywhere."

"But you are already gone."

"I'm right here."

"Not what I meant."

"What did you mean then?" I asked getting even more confused.

"From day one, you turned my life around. Made it brighter. Made me happier than I had been since Toni left. It didn't take long until you became the one thing I wanted. What I needed."

Cheryl moved even closer, our face inches apart. Her eyes glanced down to my lips. "What I craved."

She leaned in and before she kissed me, I moved back. "Cheryl..."

"I know, you're with Josie."

"I'm sorry..."

Cheryl went to move away but I quickly grabbed her and gently pulled her back towards me.

"This is a one time thing and it goes no further." I warned.

"What are you talking about?" Cheryl asked confused.

I replied by gently capturing her lips with mine. Our lips moved in sync and I couldn't help but just melt the longer our sweet, tender kissed lasted.

Cheryl was the one to break the kiss and I couldn't help but feel disappointed.

"Cheryl."

"A one time thing, I know." She said before turning on to her other side.

I layed so I was on my back and my fingers gently trailed across my lips, I couldn't believe I had finally kissed Cheryl...But it wasn't going to happen again and that hurt. A lot.
