Nobody's POV
Maxine slowly walked downstairs, her mind on so many things at once it was almost enough to make her head explode. She thought about Josie, her dream about Cheryl, yesterday's events. Her muscles and bones were still somewhat sore from the cold. She sniffled slightly, surprising herself. She didn't realise that she had started crying until then. She didn't even know what caused her to cry.
She quickly wiped her eyes as she reached the bottom of the stairs, not wanting Penelope or Cheryl to ask questions, questions she couldn't answer..Or didn't want to answer. She was unsure. She let out a deep breath before walking into the dining room.
Rose was sat at the head of the table, Cheryl and Penelope both sat beside her. The trio had a plate full of food in front of them and judging by the plate of food next to Cheryl, they had patiently waited for Maxine to join them.
"Good morning, Dear." Penelope said with a small smile.
"Morning." Maxine replied as she took her place next to Cheryl.
Cheryl remained quiet, just staring at the plate in front of her. Maxine leaned forward and looked at Cheryl. Her heart hurt slightly as Cheryl's eyes held nothing but sadness. Her facial expression made it look like she felt nothing, like she was numb. Maybe she was, she had been through a lot. Maxine understood completely, but if Cheryl was feeling that way and taking into consideration yesterday's events, she made promise to herself that she would protect Cheryl, even if it killed her. Properly.
"I know it's not something pleasant to talk about first thing in the morning." Penelope began. "But we didn't have the chance to talk about what happened yesterday." She took a sip of orange juice as she waited for either Cheryl or Maxine to speak. She looked from Cheryl to Maxine and placed her glass down when neither girl showed any signs of speaking. "Cheryl, why were you on the river?"
"Why do you care?" Cheryl replied, no emotion in her voice, not even looking up from her plate.
"I'm your Mother."
"You've been my Mother for seventeen years and you haven't cared about me once until recently and the only reason you're starting to care now, is so you don't look like such a heartless bitch in front of your former lover."
Maxine lowered her head as Penelope let out a disappointed sigh.
"What? It's true." Cheryl said turning her head to look at Maxine. "Before you got here she was a bitch. An abusive bitch. The things she would say. The things that she would do." Cheryl let out a small scornful laugh. "She would even bring men home when that monster of a father of mine was away on business trips. She is a prostitute and she runs a secret brothel..." Cheryl paused and let out a fake gasp. "Oops, I guess it's not so secret now."
"That's enough, Cheryl." Penelope said sternly as she quickly looked at Maxine who was staring right back at her, a shocked look on her face. "I am not a prostitute and as for the brothel, well. I shut that down a while ago."
"Sure." Cheryl replied as she grabbed her fork and stabbed her eggs.
The sudden change in Cheryl had caught both Penelope and Maxine by surprise. Rose was rather unbothered by the whole thing as she sat quietly eating her breakfast, not wanting to get involved.
"Remember that night, you brought a man home and I had, had enough?" Cheryl asked before taking a bite of her eggs. "I came downstairs in my sexy red outfit, and when he found out that I was sixteen and your daughter, he left? You were so bitter and so angry about that." Cheryl turned her head to look at Maxine. "You know what she said to me, Maxine? After I told her, that I knew what love is and that I felt it? She said, and I quote, "Spare me, the only kinda love you've experienced was perverse, warped and deviant." Cheryl's voice broke as she finished her sentence. "And you know something, Mother? For you to say that, after you had been in love with a woman. In love with her." She gestured to Maxine. "It makes you a hypocrite because how dare you, how dare you say the love I experienced was all of those things when you felt the exact same once upon a time."
