She was exhausted, beyond that if she was to be honest with herself. Kat pressed her forehead against her steering wheel and took a deep breath. It was late, or early depending on your take of the time. She shut the vehicle off and prepped herself for her husband's disappointment, flipping on the overhead light. The redhead had found herself wide awake, her mind shooting scenarios about what was to come when she walked through those front doors. She studied her features in the mirror, her hair was in place, her clothes straightened. There was nothing out of the ordinary except...
'Oh no.' The woman slid up in her seat to stare at her own reflection harder. 'No, no, no, no, no.' Kat placed her fingers against the left side of her neck where a bright red bruise, slowly tinting blue around the edges took its place. 'Damn it, Dom.' She tried to cover the new found mark but had nothing to do so. Kat tossed her head against the headrest and groaned, cursing herself for letting such a thing happen. As she sat there, wasting more time before her husband would know she was home, Kat raised her phone. She hovered the device just slightly away from her neck, pointing to the bruise as she snapped the photo. Her fingers quickly moved against the screen before she sent a message to the brunette. Dom had replied back with a statement saying she was marking her territory, Kat rolled her eyes, scoffing loudly before she decided to close her phone and climb from the car. She opened the trunk just to see if she could find something, anything really that would help to cover up her neck before walking inside her own front door.
Kat's stomach churned as she made it to the front door, her keys rattling before they met the lock. Once the door cracked open, a very hyper Bernie came hopping around the base of the wooden frame, his excitement to see his owner warming the woman. Kat fell to her knees to brush her fingers through his fur, his jumps causing small noises to echo into bigger ones throughout the home.
'Okay Bern.' Kat slowly pushed the animal into the house, closing the door before dangling her keys against her index finger. She placed her thumb over one of them, pushing it against her palm as she trailed the first floor to find her husband. The dining room table had been set, two plates lay empty against the dark cloth, forks and knives crossing one another in the center. Ray had been startled awake on the sofa when Bernie ran from his lap. He only pushed himself up enough to stare at his wife when she walked under the archway.
Kat spotted him first, her gentle smile being for not, neither of them could see the other. With a flick of a switch, the room dimly lit up at first, adjusting to brighten more as Bernie ran behind the couch and then in front of it again. He thought it meant it was morning and so he kicked his small legs up into high gear. Kat took a breath, bringing her keys down against the end table, praying the jacket she found in the trunk of the car would keep the bruise against her skin covered.
'Hey.' Kat sighed, her eyes finding the unreadable ones before her.
'So, what was the reason for you ignoring me all night?' Ray had went straight to the point, his elbow still digging into one of the soft sofa pillows as he unconsciously studied his wife's every move.
'I lost track of time and before I knew it...' Kat shrugged, trying to keep the moment light. 'Before I knew it was already way too late to make it back before dinner.'
'But you didn't even call me Kat. You didn't even answer any of my messages for that matter.'
'I left my phone in the car.'
'All day?' Ray knew his wife was telling him the truth, she rarely lied to him and he could always tell when she did so. He pushed himself to sit upright, his eyes doing another once over her body before he flung his hand out beckoning her to join him. Kat was hesitant at first. The only thing currently on her mind was a bright hickey she was trying to keep covered. There was no way to explain such a bruise and Ray wasn't stupid and he definitely wouldn't fall for some story she would have found herself making up.
