To say that Kat woke up on the wrong side of the bed was an understatement. It felt more like she woke up on the wrong side of herself, annoyed and exhausted. She sat up to study the sun shining through the window, her body aching from the lack of sleep. She had no idea on what time it could have been, nor any other source besides her phone for clarification. She trudged towards the door, her hand pressed against the archway.
"Ray!" She called out, "Why didn't you wake me, what time is it?" Kat awaited the answer, her head throbbing but not from pain. It was all of her thoughts that swirled through her mind at night. She couldn't pinpoint when she drifted off but knew she was lacking energy. "Ray!"
"It's five thirty." The man grumbled. "I was going to wake you at six."
"Did you find my phone?" They were yelling between the two floors.
"I'll look for it."
"Now, Ray." The redhead shut the bedroom door, pulling clothes out of her dresser before storming into the bathroom. Kat knew she'd need to blow off some of her pent up steam and it wasn't going to need to be fulfilled by sex this time. She knew that the pang in her chest, no matter the hurt that held space there, encompassed sadness. As she climbed into the shower, she tried to focus her breathing by listening to the streaming water, but it hadn't helped. Moments later Ray had walked into the bathroom, his hand waving in the air.
"I found it." He smiled, proud of himself as Kat turned off the faucet, stepping out before grabbing a towel. She didn't know why all of a sudden seeing her husband brought a slight hint of annoyance in her, but she held steady.
"Thanks." The redhead grabbed the device from him, pushing past to walk into the room.
"You're still upset." Ray pointed out the obvious.
"I can't explain to you right now how I feel, so it'd be best if you just left me alone."
"I love how you're making all of this my fault." The man watched his wife toss her towel as she quickly dressed.
"Just drop it."
"Kat."
"Ray..." she faced him, her discontent showing across her features. "You don't understand how I feel. And I don't expect you to because this is something that you never thought would happen to us, and I understand that. But I don't want to talk about how my heart feels as if it's not shattered into small miniscule pieces and the only thing holding it up is the constant reminder that I still have you."
"Why are you saying that as if I'm second, or as if that's a bad thing?" He narrowed his eyes as Kat finally pulled her shirt down over her torso, her head tilting as she gazed at him. "You've got to stop saying shit like that to me."
"Then do as I say and leave me alone for now." The redhead grabbed her phone, walking out into the hall as Ray followed.
"Do you not hear yourself? Do you not hear what you're asking of me? I'm standing here as your husband, and you're telling me to let you mourn over a fling."
"Thin line Ray." The woman spoke up, "you're walking on a thin line." After Kat had gotten herself ready, the time being no later than six fifteen, Ray watched as the redhead opened the door.
"Where are you going? Your car doesn't come until seven."
Without a word, Kat made her way outside as Ray, pissed as he was, followed her. His bare feet and opened bathrobe reminded him of the show he was putting on. He tugged the rope across his waist tighter, catching up with the redhead at the base of her friend's steps.
