Kat sat in her apartment alone. The walls around her felt as if they were closing in. It had been just a little over a few days since that devastating talk in Melanie's spare room. Her mind was still fuzzy, her chest still ached. With every breath the redhead took she found herself angrily using her right hand to swirl her wedding bands around and around in a circle. Through her puffy red eyes she studied the living room window. The eerily quiet air engulfed her. Her breath pausing as she inhaled. A car door shut outside, an exhaled breath following before she stood.
It was Saturday, a warm and beautiful day and yet the redhead stayed inside to tend to her aching heart. She was still confused on what was happening to her, to her life that seemed to have at least worked out up until this point. Kat ran her fingers against the drapes, her eyes wincing at the light. Dom had stepped out of a car, a smile on her face as she spoke to her driver. A shrug leaving the brunette's shoulders before she pulled back and waved goodbye. Kat could feel the small pinch in her chest the moment those brown eyes found their way to her apartment.
Dom crossed her arms, her focus on the building for a moment or two before she turned to walk inside of her own place. It was funny, Kat figured. Whenever she would look out after hearing a car, at least for the times it was the brunette, their eyes seemed to have met before she'd look away. Kat placed her back against the wall and studied the space she was left in. Her house felt eerie, as if all the life had been sucked dry. And to her, it had been. Ray did what he said. He packed up, grabbed Bernie and went back to Toronto. Neither of the two contacted the other. They didn't know why, they just didn't.
Kat pushed her way into the kitchen, flinging open her freezer door before grabbing a frozen meal. This was unlike her. She usually cared about what she shoved into her body, no pun intended. But as of late, the past few days hit her hard and she decided, who cares? Her fingers pulled the the clear film of the meal back before she placed it into the microwave. Her head starting to pound as memories floated into her mind.
"Give me a break." She whispered to herself as her stomach churned. "Please, just stop thinking."
It was hard to do. To turn off ones mind from the thoughts of the way someone's smile could brighten up your life. It was hard. That thought drifted back and forth between Ray and Dom as the redhead studied her wedding bands once more. The metal ran against her finger as she dug her nail against the skin of her palm. Kat couldn't help her thoughts, she couldn't help the yearning that was there. She shut her eyes as she listened out for her food as it cooked. Her stomach growled, it was late. She had only been eating once a day and did so only because she wasn't mad at herself, no, she was pissed off at how her life was playing out before her. She was mad at.....
"Be quiet." She told herself, turning back towards the food as it spun in its cage. "But I also don't see why she's just so... but then Ray." Kat angrily bit down on her bottom lip to stop herself from talking. There was something she couldn't mask, and that was the ache that still rippled through her. She wanted Dom. She knew that. But the brunette asked for space and it confused her and it hurt her and yes, she was upset and angry. Ray hadn't spoken to her in the past few days and she didn't blame him. She supposed her marriage was over but she didn't have time to think about that because everything ached.
The microwave went off as the steam drifted from the vegetable bowl. She couldn't' stay mad forever, although her competitive side was telling her to challenge herself to do so. Kat carried her small bowl to the living room sofa, pushing away the empty tissue box and bottles of wine as she settled on the fabric. Her heart twisted as she forced the first spoonful down. She wanted to gag but held it in. She was never one to break this way, the pain never hurt like this before. It never consumed her entire being and yet here she was on the verge of being someone she never thought she could be.
