Peter sighed sadly as he headed for the stables, which is where he thought Philip would be.
He couldn't help but think what would happen if he didn't make it in time, after all, the journey usually takes three to four weeks... and he had to do it in two. How an earth was he supposed to do that? Shaking his head quickly he took a deep breath, he would do it, no matter what... his little brothers life depended on it.
Sighing he reached the stables and came across Philip, who looked up as he entered. "King Peter." He said, standing and bowing his head.
"Hello Philip." Peter replied with a forced smile.
Philip looked back up at him with a look of sympathy on his face. "I heard about Edmund." He said slowly. "How is he? And how are you?"
Peter sighed. "I'm alright I suppose." He mumbled. "But Edmund... not so much."
"Oh dear." Philip said, looking quite upset.
"We - We found a way to stop the poison from-" Peter swallowed hard. "Killing him. I have to travel to the west, out of Narnia to a tree in a special garden or what not."
"I have heard of such a garden." Philip said with a slight nod.
Peter nodded back a little. "Orious advised that someone goes with me though." He said. "And I wondered if you'd like to come?"
"Me, your majesty?" Philip questioned, looking a little shocked.
Peter nodded. "Edmund suggested it." He mumbled. "Of course you don't have to if you don't want to."
"No no." Philip said quickly. "I'll help in anyway possible, I'll come."
"Thank you." Peter said with a small smile. "One thing though. The journey usually takes three to four weeks, but we have to do it in two otherwise Edmund will-" Peter swallowed hard. "He's gonna die in two weeks." He forced out.
Philip nodded. "Then we'll do it in two weeks." He said.
"Thank you so much for this Philip." Peter said. "I'm gonna go say goodbye to my siblings and then we'll leave?"
Philip nodded. "As you wish your majesty." He said.
Peter nodded and after saying goodbye slowly left for the castle again.
He entered through a small side door and headed down the corridor, practically running up a set of stairs before arriving at his and Edmund's room.
Opening the door and stepping inside his eyes went wide.
Edmund was still in Peter's bed, Susan sat beside him as she tried to get him to stop coughing ; he didn't know where Lucy was.
Running over to the bed he sat on the other side of his brother, glancing over his head at Susan. "How long's he been coughing for?" He asked as Edmund buried his face against Susan's shoulder, letting out more hacking coughs.
Susan swallowed hard as she rubbed Edmund's back. "A few minutes." She choked. "I can't get him to stop, Lucy's gone to get some water."
Peter sighed sadly and held out his arms. Susan nodded and gently gave Edmund to Peter, where he buried his face against his older brothers chest, tears rolling down his cheeks as he coughed.
"Okay." Peter whispered, trying to stay calm as he wrapped his arms tightly around his brother.
Edmund gasped harshly before going back to coughing. "My-" He let out a few more coughs before: "My chest hurts." He gasped.
"I'm not surprised." Peter whispered to himself. He took a deep breath before sitting Edmund in his lap, not caring what he'd think about the matter, before starting to rub slow circles on his chest.
Susan sighed sadly and placed a hand on Edmund's shoulder, hoping that Peter's idea would work.
Peter continued rubbing Edmund's chest as he coughed, and after a while he started to calm down until he wasn't coughing at all. He collapsed against Peter, taking deep breaths as tears rolled down his cheeks.
"Okay." Peter whispered, removing his hand and wrapping both arms around his brother.
"T - Thank you." Edmund choked, barely able to get the words past his lips.
Peter smiled sadly, eyes filling with tears. "No problem." He whispered, trying to ignore the blood that had stained Edmund's hands, but weirdly not Peter's tunic this time.
There was a while of silence before Lucy burst into the room, a glass of water in her hand.
Edmund jumped violently and coughed a few more times, but to Peter's relief relaxed again.
Lucy looked relieved to see that Edmund had stopped coughing, and clambered onto the bed, handing Peter the glass.
"Ed?" Peter mumbled, placing the rim of the cup to Edmund's lips.
It took a while, but Edmund managed to take a few sips before burying his face against Peter's shoulder.
Peter sighed sadly. "Su?" He asked.
"Yeah?" His sister replied.
"Can you go get Ed something to eat?" Peter asked. "I'm not leaving until he's eaten something."
Susan nodded and, with a sad smile, stood and left the room.
Edmund swallowed hard. "Don't. Want. Food." He choked, voice raspy.
"Ed you need to eat something." Peter sighed. "You haven't eaten much since this all started."
Edmund sighed. "Can't." He whispered. "Throat - hurts."
"I know it does Ed." Peter sighed. "Susan will probably get you something that'll be easy to swallow alright?"
Edmund didn't have the strength to argue and just nodded his head, resting it against Peter's chest with a shuddering sigh.
After a short while Susan returned with a bowl of soup.
"Thanks." Peter mumbled as she handed it to him, sitting back down on the edge of the bed beside Lucy. "Ed please?"
Edmund managed to glance up at Peter and after quite a bit of hesitation he opened his mouth slightly.
Peter managed to give him half the bowl before he shook his head, turning away and coughing slightly.
Peter sighed. "Alright." He mumbled, placing the bowl on the bedside table. "I should probably leave."
Edmund's arms clamped around his waist the second he said this, and Peter's heart broke. "Ed I'll be back before you know it." He whispered in his ear.
Edmund hesitated but nodded slowly. "L - Love you." He choked.
Peter smiled sadly. "Love you too." He mumbled, before managing to get out of Edmund's grip and laying him gently down on the bed.
He bent down and placed a kiss to his forehead, whispering a quick goodbye before climbing from the bed, only now realising that Edmund had either fallen asleep, or more than likely past out.
"It's probably best." Susan mumbled. "I don't know if he would've let you leave."
Peter sighed. "Look after him won't you?" He asked his sisters. "Make sure he - he doesn't give up."
"We will Peter." Susan nodded. "Bye."
Peter nodded back, and after giving both his sisters a hug, Lucy's lasting maybe a little too long seeming as she wouldn't let go, before heading for the door and leaving.
