Chapter 22

(Hiro’s POV)

“How did you make these? What are they?” Akira demanded. I grinned.

“Cameras on both sides, video screens on both sides - so you’re not looking directly at the object, but instead you’re looking at the screen. We can see your eyes because of the cameras on the frames facing inwards. And, on the side of the frame, there’s a switch that allows you to turn both sides off if the switch is to the back, turn the part that we see off if it’s in the middle, or turn both sides on at the front. I designed them myself,” I said brazenly and quickly. She wiped her tears away and hugged me again.

“Again, thank you, Hiro,” she whispered. I nodded, knowing that she could see my nod this time. She pulled away and gave fist bumps and high-five’s to everyone else. Baymax was, of course, the only one who said “Bah-a-la-la-la” after fist bumping her, causing her to laugh. She walked back to me and stood to my right. I hopped up onto Baymax’s back.

“Shall we?” I held out my hand to her. She grinned and took it with her own hand and I pulled her up next to me on Baymax’s shoulders. We both slipped our helmets on.

“Have fun! We’ll be here with the movie when you get back!” Honey cheered. The rest of the group waved. Akira put a hand on my back for balance and the other hand on Baymax’s wing.

“Baymax, add thrust,” I demanded.  He blasted upwards into the sky. Akira’s face lit up.

“It’s so amazing!” she shouted to me. I nodded and smiled back at her. Baymax flew us over the city and looped around the Sanfransokyo Bridge. Her face was in a constant smile. She fist pumped into the air and yelled to show her enthusiasm. I copied her motions of enthusiasm. Baymax flew us over to one of the fish balloon fans in the air and landed. “Why’d we stop?” I smirked.

“For the second surprise,” I explained. Baymax sat down and I sat down in front of him. I patted the space beside me to show I was asking her to sit. She complied and joined me. We both removed our helmets and set them to the side. “Look, we made it just in time.” I pointed to the sunset that had just begun. Akira gasped and her eyes widened.

“Oh my god… It’s beautiful…,” she whispered in awe. “Just look at the colors.” I smiled upon seeing her gorgeous grinning face.

“Not as beautiful as you,” I whispered. She blushed and quickly turned her head to me and widened her eyed. Realizing that I hadn’t meant to say that out loud, I blushed and hid my face with my hands. “I’m so sorry! Oh geez, I swear didn’t mean to say that aloud,” I apologized, still hiding my face. She smiled, still blushing, and giggled.

“Thank you, Hiro,” she thanked and then went back to looking at the oranges and pinks painted in the sky. I glanced up at her, uncovered my face, and then noticed her cheeks were still red.  I looked at our hands and slid my hand slowly closer to hers and left it an inch away from hers. I looked at her from the corner of my eyes to see her still looking at the sky. I sighed. I’m an idiot. Why do I even bother? She has no interest in a guy like me. I began to pull my hand back, but her fingers suddenly reached out and touched mine gingerly. I blushed deeply and looked back to her face. She was still watching the sunset, but her face was flushed a deep crimson red and she was biting her lip nervously. I could hear her nervous breathing as she turned her hand over so her palm was up. I slowly and carefully took her hand and laced our fingers together. I slowly scooted closer to her so our sides were touching.

“Akira, can… can I ask something?
