Chapter 43

(Akira’s POV)

My eyes shot open and I gasped. I was lying down on the cold floor of a warehouse that I didn’t recognize.

“Hiro?!” I screamed in a panic. A gentle hand touched my shoulder. I spun around to see the genius standing next to me. His armor was still in pretty bad condition and blood was caked on a few places that had been bleeding. “Oh my god! Are you okay?” I spun around, jumped up, and hugged him. He hugged me back and nodded. He taped my shoulder and placed his finger over his mouth to warn me to be quiet. I nodded. He walked me over to a corner where the other 5 were sitting quietly.

A noise behind a set of doors alerted everyone. We all jumped up and turned to the door. I heard some movement at the door. Then, there was an almost unnoticeable flicker of the camera on the glasses. I saw a flicker of black over Hiro on the camera, and then it when back to normal. I shrugged it off as a defect due to damage of my lenses. The doors flung open to reveal Yokai, Evan, Henry, Roderick, and 2 human-sized robots – all with their weapons drawn. I glared at Yokai for hurting Hiro and the rest of the team. I aimed my laser and shot, he dodged, but barely. The edge of his cheek was cut by the laser. Suddenly, Yokai and his team stopped. They all looked to me.

“A-Akira…?” Hiro’s voice cracked in pain, sadness, and surprisement. I expected Hiro’s voice to come from Hiro, who was standing next to me, but instead it came from Yokai. The screen flickered again for a millisecond, and the dark colors of Yokai, the three men, and the two robots were briefly replaced with purple, white, green, yellow, pink, and dark blue. I stepped back and glanced to Hiro standing next to me, then back to Yokai. He took my hand gently and then released it. He silently pointed to Yokai and his team. Gogo, Wasabi, Fred, and Honey each jumped forwards to attack. I stood back from the fight, confused by the scene. Yokai stood still at the other end staring blankly at me.

He dropped to his knees and kept looking at me. The lenses flickered again, and I looked closely at the image changing this time, focusing on it. The image revealed the exact opposite scene than I had been seeing. The Hiro that was beside me turned into Yokai, and the Yokai across from me turned into Hiro. The people who I thought were my friends turned into Evan, Henry, Roderick, and a robot. The people who I thought were the enemies turned into Gogo, Fred, Wasabi, Baymax, and Honey. The flicker was brief, but I still caught the change.

“Akira, I… You’re working with the villians…? Why…?” Hiro’s voice spoke from the Yokai’s image from across the room. I looked around the room at the fighting, realizing that I just shot a laser at Hiro.

“You… you tricked me…” I growled at the real Yokai that looked like Hiro.

“Damn, I was hoping that’d work for long enough for you to do some real damage,” the real Yokai said. I held my arm up to shoot him. My hand trembled; I couldn’t hurt someone that looked like Hiro. I bit my lip, and dropped my arm.

“I- I can’t,” I muttered. Yokai laughed. “But I can do this!” I yanked the glasses off my face, letting the blind darkness take over my vision. Once I could no longer see, I immediately noticed that my glasses were heavier than usual, they were a different pair of glasses. I flung the glasses to the floor in anger and stepped on them, cracking the frames and lenses. I let the sounds take over and focuses on each and every tiny noise, each breath, each foot step, every heartbeat, the noises of clothing, and all voices.

I heard Yokai move his microbots around him, and the sounds of everyone else, except for Yokai, Hiro, and me fighting. After being injured so much, it sounded like our team was losing. I aimed forwards and shot at Yokai. He let out a grunt of pain, but he obviously hadn’t been injured badly.

“Akira!” Hiro shouted. His footsteps indicated that he was running towards me. I was wrapped tightly in his arms. As he pulled me into the brief hug, my cheek brushed against his, causing his fresh blood from the wound I had caused to smear across my own cheek. I pulled away and turned to Yokai. “Akira, run, please! You can’t see, you’ll get hurt!”

“I already am hurt, emotionally and physically,” I growled facing Yokai. I, without too much force, pushed Hiro a foot back. The microbots swarmed us. I felt my fists being grabbed by the bots and I heard the sharp swirling movements of the metallic clusters forming into dagger-sharp columns. I was so angry at Yokai that I didn’t even bother struggling. I was enraged and focused on nothing but him and taking him down. “You made me harm Hiro! You tricked me! You hurt him and then if it wasn’t enough, you tricked me into hurting him more!” I growled angrily. I was so focused on Callaghan that I could barely hear Hiro screaming my name and trying to get me to run before Yokai attacked. The bots stabbed forwards to me.
