Breaking a mating bond was meant to be impossible. Maybe they should have thought of that before they had done it. Considered all of the consequences. But they had been young and in love and there was never going to be anyone else. Those promises had been made in the dark, under the pale light of the moon, with nothing but the stars as their witness.
And had been broken under the harshness of the sun, the heat beating down upon their sins, exposing them for what they were.
It had been painful. So incredibly painful that it seemed like all he ever had to do was think of it for the dull ache to come back to life. Like it had never really completely disappeared. Scrubbing a mark that old and that strong had been an ordeal he'd never wanted to endure. A suffering he didn't think he was capable of making it through. It constantly felt like pieces of his soul were being broken off and shattered into thousands of tiny shards, which were then used to torture him further.
It had felt like he was dying, and he supposed in a way, he had. Part of him was definitely gone now, lost to the person who was meant to keep it safe.
...
It was days before he saw the angel again. Despite how he had tried to rid the sight from his mind, to look at it like it had all just been some vivid dream.
"You're up early." That voice sounded as beautiful and melodious as it had before, and he smiled when he turned to find the source. There was Seokjin, looking every inch the perfect angel, a true sight to behold. Even with a backpack slung over his shoulder and a ball cap pulled low over his eyes.
"More like up late. I work nights." His own door hadn't been unlocked yet and he twisted to lean against it, putting his uniform on full display.
"You're a police officer." Somehow he still just sounded amused, adjusting the strap slightly, shifting the weight of it. "Does that mean if I'm ever in trouble you're come rescue me?"
"Sure will." It sounded ridiculous. like something out of a movie. But he didn't even care.
"I feel safer already." There was a soft smile as he said it, and then he just waving, a form of goodbye, an end to their conversation. And for a split second he panicked, not quite prepared to watch the other walk away.
"Wait! Are you on your way to class?"
"How'd you guess?"
"The backpack was a dead give away."
"Such a smart alpha." It was also ridiculous how his alpha absolutely preened at that praise.
"Do you need a ride?"
"No, it's fine. I usually just take the subway."
"Come on. Which would you rather do, ride in some stinky, crowded subway or have a super smart alpha give you a ride?"
"Can I have a minute to think about it?"
"Oh how you wound me."
...
Realistically he should have changed first, but his common sense was currently clouded, his decision making suffering vastly as a result. Driving around in his own car still dressed in full uniform was probably breaking some unspoken rule - not to mention all of the strange looks it was currently getting him - but he was having a hard time caring.
"So what are you studying?" Teeth bite into that full bottom lip and for a second it was exceptionally difficult to keep his eyes on the road.
"Acting." It was said like he was fully prepared to have his choice be judged.
"Really? That's so cool. I always wanted to study music, but I ended up going into law enforcement instead."
"So you have a degree too?"
"Sure do."
"God you really are a smart alpha. I'm such a sucker for those." He said it wistfully, turning to look out the window.
"Oh, so it's brains that you go for."
"Is this where you want me to say the rest of you isn't bad either?"
"Now would be a good time." It was light and teasing, two things he hadn't been in so long.
"Mm, I think I'll pass." Glancing over, he gave a other one of those little smiles, and Jungkook thought he could get addicted to those alone.
"Such a cruel omega."
"What makes you think I'm an omega?" He tried to sound indignant. He really did. But it failed spectacularly.
"Do you really need me to answer that?"
"I could still grow!" No he couldn't. He hadn't grown since he was fourteen, a fact that never failed to dismay him.
"Sure you could. But for your information, it's your scent. You smell like fresh vanilla beans."
"Of course it was. So troublesome, always giving me away."
"I like it." It was so different from Jimin's scent, a strong floral that had never failed to flare his allergies and leave him miserable. Seokjin's was light, soft yet bold, carrying a warmth at the end that made him feel something he couldn't describe.
"I like yours too." Was that a soft blush he saw creeping into the others cheeks? The color complimented him so well. "It reminds me of the sea."
"We can scent if you want." Where had that come from? What was currently going through his mind that made those words seem like a good idea?
"Yeah, I don't think so. I'd like to live and my brother will absolutely kill me if I come home covered in an alphas scent. Which is a shame, because I'd really like to drown in yours." Which, okay, he hadn't been expecting that. "Thanks for the ride, alpha."
"Huh?" Turning his attention back to where it should have been all along, he realized they were in front of the university, and he pulled into the nearest lot to get off the street. "Anytime. I get off at six, so I'm yours if you need me."
"Don't make promises you can't keep." There was that smile again, before he was pulling his backpack off the floor and slipping out of the vehicle before he could say another word.
Apparently disappearing was a secret hidden talent he didn't know the other possessed, but was remarkably good at.
