"Did you get any of that lesson?" Marvin asked after class.
It seemed that he was as interested in Chemistry as I was. We didn't have a very good teacher this semester; he was all textbook and no prac, words and no action. Some seemed to thrive with that kind of study, but it seemed for Marvin and I, not so much.
I shook my head, "no clue really," I replied.
We chatted as we walked into the playground. The lunch time for the primary school students would be coming to an end very soon because the high schoolers lunch is starting. I watched as some of the younger kids were finishing off their games or refusing to leave their places when the teacher gave them the five minute warning.
"So what are you going to be doing for Family Month?" Marvin asked stretching his arms, "my Mum wants to come in and talk about what she does."
"What does she do?" I asked.
"She's a lawyer," he explained, "I myself am not too interested in the legal branches, but her work seems interesting enough."
I shrugged; I probably wasn't going do anything for Family Month. It's a month of the year where one family member from each student comes and tells about their job, at the end of the month the Primary Schoolers make a Family Tree and hang them up in their classrooms.
It was rather cute.
"My parents certainly aren't coming," I explained.
"For obvious reasons, I'm sure," Marvin replied.
I wasn't foolish enough to give him all the details of my family life, blackmail material can go for a lot these days. But he seemed fine with what information I had given him.
Before our conversation could continue, there was loud chanting with laughter and teasing in the air, followed by a loud scream and more laughter. It didn't take me long to guess where the fight was. There was a crowd of people on the far side of the playground under some trees. Marvin and I both seemed convinced that this wasn't good.
We walked over to the crowd and managed to push our way to the front where I saw a truly scary scene.
Adam had pinned down one of the seniors, had a grasp on his collar and was slamming his head into the ground followed by punching or kicking and in general yelling and swearing.
I went wide eyed as I walked over, "Adam!" I yelled as I grabbed him by the arms and pulled him off the student. People booed me, but I didn't care as I carried the kicking and struggling Adam.
I dropped him on the other side of the circle as the senior tried to collect himself from his attack, most likely looking for some dignity as well.
"What the hell are you doing?" I hissed as Adam tried to go past me to have another go at the student.
"I'm standing up for myself," Adam growled, "I've had enough of this," he looked to the student and yelled, "you can make fun of me all you want, but don't you say anything about my mother!" I went wide eyed, wow... mother taunting... that was hitting below the belt.
I turned to the student, who seemed to collect enough dignity to answer back, "just cause you don't know you old hag, doesn't mean you can take it out on me," he replied, "I can see why she would've left a little brat like yourself and your father."
Adam completely lost it as she yelled and screamed as he tried to get past me. "Adam, no!" I snapped basically hugging him and picking him up. He struggled in my firm grip and refused to calm down, he wanted to rip his face off and bury him in a pit of sting-rays.
The student continued to mock Adam to a point where Adam was nearly crying, that's when I broke down. "Would you shut up," I snapped at him when Adam started crying, "we get it, we don't need you bragging about that fact you know how to speak."
