"I'm sorry what?"

i clenched on my utensils, lumingon ako ng bahagya sa nanay kong tumigil din sa pagkain. mali ata yung pagkakarinig ko, maybe i was too distracted that i heard her words wrong.

"I said, clear your schedule for saturday night. we'll be having your engagement dinner at the Laurence Residence." she repeated without a single trace of hesitation. my brows furrowed, pinipilit intindihin yung mga sinabi niya. not that i don't really understand it pero my mind couldn't just process everything.

tinignan ko si dad, he was just eating silently as if alam niya na yung sinabi ni Mommy. engagement... ako? engage?

i didn't stop staring at my dad. finally, he gave in and looked back. pinipigilan niya ang sarili niyang makisali sa usapan pero ayokong tanungin si mommy, baka mag resulta lang yon sa sagutan.

my dad cleared his throat and loosened his tie before speaking. "Napag pasiyahan namin ng isang malapit na business partner natin na mag sagawa ng engagement sa dalawa naming panganay. Richard's son is nice. I assure you that Louie."

hindi nakatulong yung sagot ng tatay ko at tuluyan nang nag init yung ulo ko. binalik ko kay mommy yung tingin ko at sumenyas siya sa mga katulong namin na iwan kami sa dining room para makapag usap. i waited for them to leave so that it wouldn't embarass ourselves. i sighed, taking a deep breath before voicing out my thoughts.

"Engagement? why?" i asked, trying to understand their sudden decision.

"this will strengthen the bond between both companies." walang bahid ng emosyong sinagot ng mommy ko yung tanong.

"So I'm just a material needed for the company to prosper?"

"Elouise." diin niya sa pagtawag sa pangalan ko. the tension is getting worse but i'm trying my best to contain my anger.
