"Yay! Mum's getting discharged today!" Daniel screamed at the top of his lungs.
He started dancing in a weird way out of excitement which resulted into our laughter. Normally, you'd be expecting only three people in mum's ward at this time but it wasn't. Helen, my mom's friend, was with us.
I mean what's the point?!!
She never visited mom through out her stay in here but when mom informed her last night that she was leaving today, Helen came running like a shameless bird.
She was sitting right beside mom and they were laughing at my brother's dance steps. "Okay Daniel that's enough. You can go eat the doughnuts I got for you from daisy's"
Daisy's Doughnuts was a doughnut shop close to our home. "Daisy's my favorite!" He said and pounced on the box of doughnuts munching them in joy.
"Oh children. They always bring out the light in you." Helen said and I rolled my eyes. Left to me, she wasn't supposed to be there nor even be called a friend.
"Oh yeah Riley, you know that job I told you about some days back."
Mom tried to recollect. "Oh that... one you told me about uhm washing dishes."
I looked away in pain cause she was still considering shuffling two jobs. Tragic.
"Yes!" Helen screamed in delight. "That one Riley. I got another one which Teresa can keep herself busy with so you guys can gather up enough money to fend for yourselves." She whispered. "The pay is fat."
Why's she acting like she cares? Her british accent was even annoying me.
Mom's face brightened and said. "Oh, that's good. I'm sure Tessie won't mind working instead of moving around prying into what isn't her business." She was referring to my investigation on dad's death. Wow mum.
Doing something with my time this break wasn't a bad idea at all. "I can do it. I'm basically doing nothing so, it's fine."
"Very well then. Can you guys start tomorrow or you still want to do other things? I want to personally show you guys the place."
"Can you give my mom a break? She's about to get discharged and you're bringing up..."
"Teresa...ssh." Woah! Mom just 'sshed' me. Guys, she just 'sshed' me!
She turned to Helen. "We'll start early in the morning tomorrow..."
"But mom... you'll be strong enough?" Daniel asked with the half bitten doughnut which was laced with chocolate cream in his little hand.
"Of course. I've been lying in here for days doing absolutely nothing so, why won't I be fine? I'll be good don't worry Dan." Mom replied with a smile.
If that's what she wants, then fine.
Finally, the nurse walked in with a small paper in her hand. The doctor had already authorized her discharged so, the nurse was just meant to complete the process.
She smiled at my mom. "Mrs Riley Houston, I'm sure you're very excited to leave."
"I am very eager to stop this sedentary lifestyle."
The nurse gave out a laugh and said. "Okay, before you go...you have to note that you should eat foods with less salt since you're hypertensive. We don't want that blood pressure escalating."
"Same here." Mom said and the nurse continued. "Then you do some physical exercises...you know and manage stress..."
"Stress, mom. Manage stress." I emphasized and the nurse nodded in confusion.
"Yes, she's right. Don't do anything that'll be too stressful...and always check your blood pressure with the sphygmomanometer doctor Dylan gifted you..."
"Dylan gave my mom a sphyg?" I asked.
"Yes... he's also paying for all her medications. In that light Mrs Riley, be using those anti hypertensive drugs and no smoking."
"Okay, okay." She said. "The doctors have told me all these already."
She chuckled. "Okay then. You're good to go."
"Finally! It's been ages." Dan added and mom got on her feet. I didn't know this moment will come where I'll say goodbye to Laken's general hospital. It has been a lot in here. I was always scared of mom dying in here but, she didn't. I mean, she's getting out of here in some minutes. The nurse and two other health workers helped with her bags.
Thank you Lord. My mom's out of this hospital. Helen then moved closer to me. "We never knew this day would come."
I turned my face to her in annoyance. "Who the fuck is we?"
