SDA PROLOGUE
"Evelyn," she called, her voice dark and serious. I looked at her. When our eyes met, a shiver went down to my spine. I never saw her as a scary person.
"Bakit?" I tried to compose myself.
"Alam ko kung bakit ka andito. Pasok ka," she said as she opened the door widely.
Umupo siya sa kanyang kama habang nakatayo lang ako sa kanyang harapan. I was fidgeting my fingers and knots were starting to form inside my stomach.
She nodded as a smile formed on her face. I closed my eyes, trying to calm myself down.
"Bakit mo naman 'yon ginawa? Natuwa ka ba sa pagpapahamak sa amin? Natuwa ka ba sa pangloloko sa amin?"
"Oo, Evelyn, natuwa naman ako," sabi niya. "Alam kong madami kang mga tanong. Hindi ba gusto mo palagi ng sagot sa mga katanungan mo? Magtanong ka na at sasagutin ko."
She spread her arms as if she was waiting for a hug. "Halos lahat ng kasagutan sa mga tanong mo ay hawak-hawak ko. Madami akong nalalaman."
I stumbled backwards. My brain does not even want to process her words. Hindi matanggap ng utak ko at hindi ko din matanggap. Alam ko ang tinutukoy niya.
Parang kanina ang saya-saya lang namin kahit may krisis. Takbuhan namin ang isa't isa. Masyado siyang mabait. Masyado siyang positibo. Sa konting panahon ay andami na naming pinagsamahan. Wala ba iyon halaga sa kanya?
Kahit hindi kami ganoon katagal na nagsama, alam kong hindi niya iyon magagawa.
Kitang-kita na ba ang mga signs na niloloko niya lang kami? Hindi ko lang ba 'yon nakita? Was I too trusting?
"Tanong ka na. Time is precious and you, of all people should know that."
I gritted my teeth.
"Kung hindi ba ako sumali ng PAWN ay mangyayari pa din ito?" tanong ko sa kanya, tinutukoy ang virus at ang mga napahamak kong kasama.
She laughed but with no humor. "Mangyayari pa din, Evelyn. Kilala ng Nosoi kung sino tayo. Kilala na nila ang manlalaro nila bago pa tayo maglaro sa laro nila. 'Wag kang feeling na ikaw ang main player nila."
Tumango ako. Pretending I was okay was difficult. Lahat ng 'to, nakakapanghina na. Ayaw ko na.
